Race Design Challenge II

Will everybody posts stage 1, before we go to stage 2? I don't want others to win at my expense  . Also, do we take the c.177 AD map as the rule? How do we incorporate today's roads to an old site, i.e. a celtic pre-roman mountain/sanctuary? Where is the line? The closest point with today's roads?

What do the judges vote on? Course, historical significance? And how many pics will be allowed, so the flashy stuff doesn't overshadow the real meat? Bonus for humor :D ?

That's a super-cool challenge, but there are many loop-holes, or maybe you figured them out. Good luck, man. I'm scouting as we speak. And I'm not the only one.

You might want to take a look at the previous challenge for many of these questions... :D

As for the map, no it's not a rule. Any settlement from the Republican or Imperial era is allowed. As for the road-site distance, I would say it should be within a reasonable walk distance, like a tourist attraction. I would say definitely not more than 1 km away, maybe even less. Ideally the road should go there.
BUT if it doesn't go there and you have to walk to get there, then there must still be space for a stage finish on the road. For example, you can't just finish on an hairpin because it"s the closest point to the sanctuary or stuff like that.

All pics allowed, but you have to post map and profile as the two first things.

Started to put a few ideas down, one of the hardest things for me using that map on the previous page is working out what the modern day town names are for the ancient ones! :D

Can the route go anywhere, just as long as it starts and finishes in a Roman town? Or do you need to use the roads the Romans would have used, or at least the closest thing to them?

All present day roads allowed. Ofc using an old roman road will probably get you more cultural points...

Great!

For the Roman names, google the town, you'll see its names in history. Not much of a research compared to ther items I won't disclose  . Tonton Sport Organisation is already scouting the landscape. Beware ;) .

I'm guessing you can use modern mountain names for KOM points on climbs? Quite a few climbs don't have an old roman/Latin name.
Of course. Most modern day passes didn't even exist back then anwyay.

Yeah I've found quite a few hills and climbs which lead to old Roman settlements and monuments, but nothing very substantial in terms of climbing.

It is doubtful that I will have enough time to do this challenge justice. Looks like I will have to vacate my belt and fight for it again next year.

Will have a quick research whenever I get time to see if there is a way I can do this easily, but it looks doubtful.

To be honest, it will be difficult for me too. I have some ideas and I would really like to participate, but when I would have time to make a route I actually want to spend this time to post stages of my giro in the RDT. Moreover I'm on vacation for two weeks in July, so it will be difficult to find enough time, especially because I mainly have to use areas in which I don't really know the climbs I could use, so making the route there will take by far more time.

Do you know when exactly the start of the challenge will be? If it's in the middle of August I think i will still have enough time (my holidays start in two days) but otherwise it will be difficult, although I will of course try anyway.

For me it is just devoting the time to do a challenge like this justice. I can't ever do something half-assed, and even if the deadline is delayed, it will be tricky for me to set the time aside.

The Giro took me so long, but it was the first race I ever designed, so maybe I will get used to it. I will have a play around some evening when the wife is out and the soccer is not on the telly and maybe I will be inspired.
