Mark Cavendish quoted on the BBC sports site:
"There's less now because everybody knows it's impossible," said the 27-year-old Team Sky rider. "Cycling wants a clean and fair sport, and I'll stick my neck on the line and say that other sports would sweep it under the carpet."

He added: "If any organisation puts the time, the effort and the money into catching those cheats, they'll catch the cheats. Now cycling does that. It catches the cheats, so there's more positive cases. "

Bog-standard/tame questions, nothing about USADA case, just 'the subject of drugs' which is always replied with 'it's cleaner now' 'better than other sports' etc, etc.

Has anyone, a journalist, a reporter, asked Hincapie about this? I imagine he'd be mum about it instead of saying Lance is innocent.

I can't wait until George goes on record. When he opens up, it'd be do-or-die for Lance.

Wow. The shift is happening.
A few years ago I never would have dreamed you would hear something like this uttered on a broadcast. Wish I could have heard that..

Karma indeed.

Here are Bryant’s comments:

Finally tonight, it may be time to question that adage that “Justice Delayed is Justice Denied”, because some famous jocks who’ve been infamous jerks for a long time have finally been getting their comeuppance … and all in the last three weeks.
On May 30th, the veteran diva Terrell Owens, got kicked to the curb by the latest and probably last team that tired of his shenanigans… an indoor league football team at that.
On June 1st, Floyd Mayweather, the fighter who found it easier to get physical with the mother of his children than with Manny Pacquaio finally went to jail to begin serving a sentence for domestic battery.
On June 7th, we learned that the FBI is investigating former pitcher and fulltime blowhard Curt Schilling. A tea party guy, he evidently hates gov’t handouts, except when they’re to him. Schilling’s company, it seems, forfeited on a sweetheart Rhode Island state loan, leaving taxpayers to foot the bill.
On June 13th, the US anti-doping agency effectively said what so many have long suspected…that Lance Armstrong is a fraud and they’ve officially brought charges that may at long last cycle him out of the spotlight.
And on June 15th, Manny Ramirez, the 40 year old slugger whose been a major league pain in the *** for years, was given his release and would appear to be finally on his way out of baseball.
In the grand scheme of things, the problems of all these guys may not amount to much, unless you believe in karma…in which case, congratulations are in order, because you’re having one hell of a month.
And that’s our show for this evening. For all the good folks here at Real Sports, I’m Bryant Gumbel. Thanks so much for being with us and good night.

Katie Couture:

@MillerBode if it bums you out, show your support for lance! [edit]

Bode Miller:

@kcourture87 he's guilty

Katie Couture:

Of course the great @MillerBode would know more then a judge a jury and 500 drug tests proving innocence. You must have secret info.

Bode Miller:

@kcourture87 as u will see through testimony, it's not really secret info, and it's certainly not just me that knows it :-(

Don't know quite where else to put this. Interesting sports editorial in the NY Daily News.

"Armstrong has done something more than destroy his own mythology:

He has effectively destroyed the sport that made him rich and famous.

Cycling now makes pro wrestling look serious, and should be banned from the Olympics immediately."

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/m...andal-lebron-james-decision-article-1.1097137

Bet we'll see a lot more of this type of thing.

Edit: Maybe it's the cynic in me (clearly it is ) but what strikes me most about this editorial (aside from its being the beginnings of the savaging of LA in the press) is that its writer still takes the Olympics seriously, or sees it as sacrosanct. Oh, we mustn't let filthy cycling touch the pristine Games.

I would add that most can probably understand why he doped. But they can’t deal with the lying. He’s last tweets are absurd. I think he’s got himself stuck. If he deletes them then he covering but if pretends to maintain his innocence to those who support him it’s just plain sick. He has zero respect for his fans.

And I really wish they’d drop the vitriolic language. Star-chamber, spite, vendetta – seriously?

I'd be surprised if Mike Lupica could even show me where the rear derailleur is on a race bike. Not kidding.

I'd say he should stick to mainstream sports but he isn't particularly insightful there either.

Yes, that article was garbage. Sad display of most American's complete lack of cycling knowledge.

Yes seriously. Move on to bigger fish like Cheney.

Does this piece of **** reporter have a email adrress? The article is a crime against cycling and the wackjob who wrote it should be fired on the spot for crimes against journalism.

But it will be the "most ignorant about cycling" media crew that will lead the charge to wreck cycling. Oh well, you guys asked for it. Just fall behind and follow their lead.

Your avatar is represetative of a mixed bag too. ;)

the olympics banning is kinda silly but Lupica nailed it. It sounds like Race Radio consulted on this and Lupica listened and learned what many imbeciles can't understand about the lack of level playing field.

Cycling now makes pro wrestling look serious, and should be banned from the Olympics immediately. It is clear now, and just because of Armstrong, the biggest star in the history of the sport, that systematic doping has gone on for generations in this sport, and made a complete mockery of the idea of a level playing field.

You have different performance-enhancing drugs affecting different riders in different ways and anybody who still signs off on this, in any sport, doesn’t care about fair competition or a level playing field, just who has the best meds, the best trainers, the best “supplements.”

Pro cycling should be denied ALL exposure (Olympics, TV, etc.) until it cleans up its doped act. It is ridiculous to think that the filthy sport will ever reform itself without strong economic pressure.

And if you want to argue that all the other sports do it . . .

To be honest, cycling isn't the only sport that makes wrestling look real at this point in time. Soccer, NBA basketball, baseball (with all its doping problems) and even hockey make wrestling legit, lol. As long as there is money and enough interest, corruption will be right there in front of us. It doesn't matter what sport it is, whether it's mainstream or not.

Lupica is pretty well known. He's been in sportswriting for a long time and appears on ESPN. He was a regular on their Sunday morning's sportsreporters show.

No offense to you but I doubt your negative emails will make a dent, I'm sure his uninformed opinions have generated plenty over the years so I can't imagine he still cares.

The IOC won't kick cycling out. They are a dope-friendly organization. As long as they can manage the appearance of an anti-doping stance then it is all good.

Look at the bigger picture, the IOC's revenues are international on a scale all sports federations envy. There's no way the IOC is going to get tough on doping. They don't want any more bodies piling up, that's for sure. The bio-passport addresses that and keeps things looking legitimate.
