Hard to let yourself get dropped when the other guy is prepared to park it up right beside you. Maybe he should have fallen off at the top of Sestriere and given Del Toro a 30- 45 second gap until half way up the last climb. See if Del Toro chases Yates when he's on his own.

That’s theoretically possible, but the way Del Toro and UAE failed to respond when the Yates threat was clearer, I don’t think Carapaz sitting on Del Toro once they were together would have changed the result. Especially since DelToro supposedly thought it really was Carapaz’s job to work to defend second?!

Stupid is as stupid did in DelToro's case. Once Yates' gap got within a minute of his jersey it should have been full on, irrespective of contribution. DS's can talk to each other car to car, too. The Mutual Atomic Destruction option brought them to a very embarrassing joint outcome. Any press to the contrary have been weak attempts to cover up one main fact: Del Toro's and Carapaz's 2 1/2 weeks of hyperactivity showed why that strategy can't carry for 3 weeks unless you have more than one, serious (one protected) GC contender. Neither team did.
Carapaz, in particular has had the experience of watching Yates' go up the road. If he's rested; he's not coming back.

OMG, Claudio Gentile! He became legendary for his man-marking on Maradona and Zico in the 1982 WC
Back to bike racing, Cancellara used to joke about stopping for a coffee during the 2011 Roubaix. He had already made some funny comments the previous week after Nuyens outsprinted his (Cancellara's) man-marker Chavanel in the 2011 Ronde.

And to the Ecuadorian he sent a curious piece of advice: "Good advice for Carapaz would be to avoid flying over Mexico for the next 50 or 60 years when he returns to Ecuador." After Carapaz refused to work with Del Toro in the follow up to the Colle delle Finestre, it led to Del Toro's decision to match him. The two lost the chance to win the race as a result, and there were criticism to and from both sides.

That was what I was thinking. But that would be helping Del Toro defend his jersey, so probably the answer was "No Thanks".

anyone who thinks Carapaz should've pulled after attacking 9 times is braindead. yeah he should tow the pink jersey around trying to finish 2nd instead of 3rd. so stupid.

It's almost another dirty cycling secret about how many stomach and gastrointestinal issues riders are constantly facing,
seeing the calorie loads and types that they need and use in high level training and riding is intense to say the least. Not a doctor, can't say for sure but eating @120-160 grams of carbs per hour for extended periods has to play havoc on your digestive system!!
Look out Vuelta, maybe some additional opportunities to see Carapaz Del Toro match up!!

That gastrointestinal infection must be very severe to rule him out a week early.

Van Aert also has it, and they haven't ruled him out of the Tour.

I'm not a fan of the KOM competition, but I am a fan of Carapaz. I would rather see him go for a Vuelta GC result than the TdF KOM.
