Team prize does often produce a 'zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz' from spectators so maybe you are right.

No one, including the teams or riders, cares about the team prize. No one except for Radioshack from back in the day and teams who's race has been a failure.

So maybe Sky actually would like it, their Tour has been pretty miserable.

Dam. Cracked big time.

But IMO Richie still hasn't had a great run at a GT yet (though yes, his very bad day in the TDF '13 is some evidence that he is not a three week leader, but not conclusive proof) as a team leader. His form and health hav been very poor this season. So okay then, Nibali hasn't been great this season either, but his form was still okay, and he was always finishing races, often not losing too much time. But for Richie I don't think it should be suggested that because he cracked yesterday that he has no chance to ever podium a grand tour.

And it was hot. So not that surprising.

He may even get the racing miles into his legs now that he needs...and go to the Vuelta.

AG2R has a stage win and 3rd and 6th (or something) in the GC but they appear to want the team classification.

OT... Does this showing signal the end of Porte's chances of being allowed to lead a Sky team in the GC of a GT?

I think they'd probably consider it a bonus if they ended up winning it too. If they had to sacrifice it in order to keep Bardet on the podium I think they would.

I could see Sky giving Porte the chance to lead again in a lesser GT. He was going into this GT planning to be a domstique but inherited leadership. He didn't prepare to be a leader.

Seems like Pinot might be climbing that tiny bit better and TJVG is expected to do well in the ITT so the podium might be tough for Bardet.

The parcours in the Vuelta usually lead to stages not being overly difficult (in comparison to the Giro) so Porte leading in the Vuelta could happen. But leading the Giro... if he has a bad day he'll lose 3 hours.

Giro... lesser... :confused::mad:

I think this is more about the form Porte has showed all year not about the heat. Last year he was flying especially during the Tour. This year illness, many missed races or race dropouts. Porte himself said he's been feeling good and thinks he is improving but that was before the mountains against guys that have raced and trained all year for this race. I Think the interrupted preparation has cost him, the heat does not usually worry him. But Sky had no other choice. If they thought Nieve was up to it they would have made him team leader. Obviously they didn't. If he continues to lose time in the Tour there is probably not much point sending him to the Vuelta. He may be better to rest up for the next season. I guess the next stage will indicate whether he is going to continue to slide down the GC or whether it was just one of those off days that can happen sometimes.

The team classification carries lots of UCI ranking points. Of all the fucc ups with ranking rules etc, I think this one is the worst. The entire competition is bad for cycling.

ag2r with two riders in the top 10. Both going well. Full team to support them at this point.

And yet ag2r will sacrifice riders to go in meaningless breaks if Belkin and Sky puts people up the road. Crazy development.

ag2r should spend the entire team taking down Nibali.

No, not lesser. Your right, that was the wrong wording there. A less revered or less popular GT I guess would be better.

All true cycling fans know that the Giro is the sh*t! :D

I don't think it was the final climb that contributed wholly to cracking him - rather it was also the burden of being team leader of the best team in the tour.

With nothing to lose, Team Sky should animate today's stage by attacking after 40km from the flag.

Ten Dam has a free role, just like last year. Why would he wait for Mollema?
Other team mates are dedicated to Mollema (and a bit Ten Dam). Kruijswijk is encouraged to keep riding after helping because of the team class.

Because Mollema is 3' ahead and the better GC rider. That and that he (seemed to) need(ed) help yesterday. It looked like everyone for himself, which also would match well with how Boom has ridden, and would make sense if the team is folding.

100% excellent comment.

Porte attributed his collapse on stage 13 to struggling in the hot temperatures, but after stage 14 he clarified that he has been ill for more than a week.

"I have not been feeling 100 per cent so I went on antibiotics to try and knock the infection on the head," Porte told teamsky.com. "I have been feeling it on my lungs and I haven’t been breathing well.

"All the guys have been riding so strongly for me, but this bug has really taken it out of me. It’s just one of those things unfortunately."

Well it was obvious something was wrong. He was tailed off pretty early on the last climb. Looks like 2014 is a write off for Sky unless Froome can do something in the Vuelta. When Porte gets dropped at the bottom of the climb and Frank Schleck hangs in for most of the climb that does not compute. Zubeldia was also in the group. Hats off to Frank to see him riding back into some form but Porte has not looked off since the first reasonable climb where he dropped 20 seconds or so.
