He played it perfectly. Waited until the crucial moment.

Poor Libertine. He will have to live with Sagan as WC.
My interest in cycling has been waning for a long time now. If you notice, more and more of my posts are on course design and historical cycling and less and less is on as-it-happens current cycling. This is another nail in the coffin.

Yawn. Self-absorbed much?

Ironic, being called self-absorbed for hating on a narcissistic douchebag.

So, maybe the curse of the rainbow jersey was in reverse for Sagan: losing every race in the year(s) prior to winning de world's.
Not the first time that happens - see Gilbert, for example.

But god am I happy with this. I have always held all-roundness as the true measure of a rider - the ability and willingness to fight for the win in as many stages and and terrains as professional cycling can offer. Cycling, like most sports and fields in life, veers towards specialization, so such riders are rarer and rarer. And Sagan is the best such rider since early career Valverde.

As such, it feels so incredibly right seeing him as the world champ.

Great win, saved us a win by an Aussie wheelsucker. Solo rider, Laid it on the line and GvA couldn't go with him. What's not to like. Only thing I couldn't understand was why Boasson Hagen didn't give GvA a hand.

Valverde 5th. The real best cyclist is he who has the lowest average finishing position in the Worlds, or indeed any important race he contests, over many years

.. who easily could have won 3 stages, but devoted himself to Captain Contador who was worth close to zero? So disrespectfull.

Objectively this route was absolutely perfect for Sagan. Cobbles and short steep hills. It was only missing a very tricky descent but still this win really isnt a surprise for me.

Awesome result. Yes, the most complete rider in the peleton. If anyone deserves to be World Champ, it is him. And all the sweeter that "bling" and "gerro" came so close. The 'strayans raced like cowards and still lost. Sweet.

Mad, mad, mad props to Sagan. I haven't been a fan of everything the guy has done but hell, we all make mistakes and that was well deserved. Just destroyed the top guys in the world on that last rise when he could have waited for the sprint and probably/possibly won anyway. The distance he put into those guys was amazing.

Sagan: Monument? I don't need no stinking monument! I'll take something bigger!

How strong was Haller. Involved in the crash, 1:30 behind while Dutch went full speed, was in the 10 men group in the penultimate lap, still finishes 26th. Never knew he is capable of something like this.

Sagan saying he won for the people in the world because there's some stuff going on in Europe. I hate that cringeworthy *** where athletes feel the need to play insightful commentators of world affairs.
