Rider nicknames

I am sure the various nicknames for riders is confusing to some people. We have already had people ask who the Hog is. :) I'll get the list started.

Cancellara = Spartacus
Andy Schleck = Schlecklet
Johan Bruyneel = The Hog
Pellizotti = The Dolphin
Cavendish = Frodo
Di Luca = The Killer
Cunego = Little Prince
Ricco = The Cobra
Rasmussen = The Chicken

I've included some current and very recent pros:

Thor Hushovd = God of Thunder (that is what his name translates to in English IIRC, but I don't speak Norwegian)
Paolo Savoldo = The Falcoln (considering how fast he went down hills)
Victor Hugo Pena = The Shark
Paolo Bettini = The cricket

Mostly good, older ones here:

Gilberto Simoni - The Spider
Davis Phinney - Thor
José María Jiménez -El Chaba
Roberto Heras - Rey de las Montañas Mspañolas (think I got this right. King of the Spanish Mountains)
José Luis Rubiera - Chechu
Djamolidine Abdoujaparov - The Tashkent Terror
Phil Anderson - Dr. Teeth
Laurent Fignon - Le Professeur, "Larry"
Jose Manuel Fuente - El Tarangu (man of strength and character)
John James Kelly - (I'm going to make you guess, but here's a hint: "King" was another nickname he had).

And now, for the most beautiful, and befitting nickname of all time:

Charly Gaul - The Angel of the Mountains

Cool thread, btw.

(My 1000th post!) :cool:

In Dutch they always add the name of their hometown as well, sounds even more posh I guess.

I could add:

Tom Boonen = Tornado Tom
Nico Eeckhout = Rambo
Alejandro Valverde = El imbatido
Vladimir Karpets = Raspoetin

Paolo Bettini - Il Grillo (that's Italian for cricket).
Marco Pantani - Il Pirata (little(?) Pirate); also Il Pirato (Pirate).
Ludo Dierckxsens - het Beest (the Beast).
Mario Cipollini - Supermario, Il Re Leone (the Lion King), Cipo.

These are a couple off the top of my head.

nothing posh about the condor of varsseveld. about as ugly as nicknames get.

if you have to put varsseveld in a nicname at least make it sound right (vleugels, vogel, vliegtuig, vrek, varkenspoot etc.)

should have chosen for aalten :)

I had heard Tony Rominger called "The Hammer" and "Camel" but not EPO Tony (though he did ride during the EPO era, that's for sure).

Mine Spanish isn't great, but I think "El Chaba" is a slang term that means something akin to some sort of wild cat, or animal, or "wild one". Can anyone help?

I thought of a few more fun ones:

Jean Paul Van Poppel - Popeye
Thierry Claveyrolat - The Eagle of Vizille
Jean-Francois Bernard - Jeff
Frank Vandenbroucke - Bimbo
Davis Phinney was also nicknamed "The Cash Register" because he won so many primes!

Bernard Hinault = "Le Blaireau" (The Badger) - can't believe nobody has mentioned this!
Oscar Freire = "El Gato" (The Cat)
Peter McDonald (Aussie RR Champion) = "The Machine"
One of the Extebarrias = "Extra Barrier" to the anglophones at least, after his crash into one (or something along those lines)
Christophe Moreau = "The Tongue"
Raymond Poulidor = "The Eternal Second"

I posted this on the Ricco thread, but it works here:

You gotta love a guy who comes up with his own nickname. Its like George Costanza wanting to be called T-Bone. Maybe Ricco's nickname should be "Koko the Monkey" now like George?

That would be Sean!! That's just the translation of John into Irish so technically not a nickname.

Joaquin Rodriguez = Purito (not sure what it means)

beats de condor van varsseveld, right?
de aal van aalten kan ook :)

HA, he himself isn't too happy with that nickname. I watched an interview with Boogerd, in that program wielerland on rtl4 or 7. He said something like "have you ever seen a real condor, that's one hell of an ugly bird, with that purple neck and bald turkey like head" And who can blame him... :rolleyes:

"The eel of eelten"

What about Goesting Gesink, after what I saw at the NK. He always looks as if he wants to give it a go, almost like Terpstra...

Menchov=the sfinx
Indurain= El Rey and The Silent
Rosseler= de stier van Stoumont
Rominger=the mouse
(Oh, and did anyone mention LA=The Boss/Mellow Johnny)
