By luck? He rode away from them. Everyone thought he would do it again on PR and he still crushed them. Not only that, he did it from 3 times as far away as was expected.

Luck. what a stupid comment. because next year even someone like Morabito might have the stars align correctly and win the PRR RVV double  by luckily riding 50km away from everyone and not realising it

And dont claim he just did the "lucky" PR RVV double. He won 2 stages in the Tour and owned a 3rd. Half the teams in the peloton would have had their entire season made with just that.

He also won a world tt.

Cancellara achieved all his goals in style, but Gilbert achieved more over a wider spectrum of events?

Come on. The battle between Contador/ Nibali vs Cancellara is one of stage races and GTs vs Classics and stages and it can be debated which is more important.

But Cancellara vs Gilbert. thats a battle of classics and stages vs eachother. Cancellara won bigger classics than Gilbert, bigger GT stages than Gilbert, wore a more prestigious leaders jersey than Gilbert, did better in stage races than Gilbert, and won the Worlds ITT. In other words he won more than Gilbert and his victories were more impressive than Gilbert.

To say Gilbert did better than Canc this season is like saying that Menchov did better in the TOur de France than Andy Schleck. Just because you like Menchov better does not substitute for the fact that Andies performance was clearly better. Same with Cancellara. The RVV PR double is Way way better than the Emilia Lombardy double, stages and Leaders jersey in the Tour is way better than stages and leaders jersey at the Vuelta and the World TT at least equals if not beats Amstel Gold.

Where does anything Phillipe did this season surpass Cancellaras achievments? Even if you take into account that he toped 10 all the classics that still does not make up for the gulf between Lombardy Emilia same week, and RVV Paris Roubaix same week.

Neverending discussion. I haven't voted for any rider. And I don't plan to do it. You make fair points comparing Gilbert and Cancellara to hold your opinion. CQ Ranking says something different. It's just a matter of rewarding wins vs. consistency in placings. Which one may be seen as an incentive for riders to be competitive at more races? Make your choice. ;)

I really struggle to have a single rider who simply devastated the world of cycling. AC maybe, but his recent development makes him difficult to consider.

all things considered it is difficult to look past nibali.
Spartacus had a good season too. And Gilbert was quite too, but not the best.

I dont think he did.

TTs and Cobbles are different things. Cancellara absolutely dominated both disciplines. Gilbert was good in the cobbles but nothing special, and the best in the hilly classics but didnt dominate them.

Lets not forget Canc also won the Tour of Oman (or was it Quatar). Not huge but a win is a win. THats a stage race to add to his tts and cobble total domination.

And his gt performance in the tour was more impressive than Gilberts one in the Vuelta.

well, you may like a rider or not, but OBVIOUSLY that the only doubt should been between cancelara and contador.

nibali???third in a giro, first in a vuelta (without the big guns in shape) and that's it..

can you compare that to volta ao algarve, paris nice, castilla e leon (etc), stage victories in those races, good places at fleche and liege 2nd in dauphine and a win at the tour??? lol obviously contador»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»nibali.

but cancellara?c'mon, the guy was simply perfect (almost) this year. he didnt just smashed everyone in the ronde and roubaix, he has also won other classics, tour of oman, 2 tts in the tour (tt are the toughst discipline in cycling because the rider gives 100% and ends with 0 strenght left unlike stages at GT) and the world TT. oh.. dont forget that he didnt won anymore stages at the tour (and even vuelta) only because he gave everything he had to work\protect the shlecks. he was an amazing domestique!! obviously he deserves this..

gilbert? very consistent at some classics and perhaps the strongest in some but without dominating them like canc did. gt wins ««««««««««««««««««« cancelara's gt wins. work at gts««««««««««««««««««««««««««««««««««««««««««««««««««««««««««««««««««««««««««««««««««cancelara's work. rvv and roubaix plus GPharelbeke etc»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»lombardia piamonte amstel. oh, there's a "little" left: WORLDS and tour de oman.

gilbert deserves the number 3 behind contador and the best, spartacus. and in my opinion, rodriguez===============nibali.

No Nibali? He podiumed a GT when working for somebody else and when coming in at short notice, and won another. Worth a nomination, even if he may not win.

I second that... Looked good yesterday too (until the crash) and put in a good effort at the WC's

No doubt Cancellara is the best ITT rider by far, but don't forget that in a GT he is racing against only a few others who give 100%. Some of those are GC contenders who aren't real competition for him, and a handful are ITT specialists who are giving their all. Many of the rest just want to survive the day and get back to their real jobs at the GT, ie winning sprints, getting in breakaways, or supporting their GC man. That aside, his 2010 season was pretty spectacular.

Gilbert won with a normal bike.

Actually, The Hitch, this time you are completely wrong about the Gilbert vs Cancellara debate

Just look at the World Cup 'ranking' I posted in the other topic. Gilbert COMPLETELY dominates over Cancellara as classics rider.

Not only did Gilbert win 2 ex-World cup races as well (AGR, Lombardia) like Cancellara (PR/RVV), but Gilbert also finished top in sprint classics (MSR), cobble classics (Gent Wevelgem and RVV)+light and heavy one-day races. Plus winning Vuelta stages.

Cancellara has timetrials + cobble races.. that's it. He wasn't as great in hilly races as last year...in fact he flopped in anything going uphill this year.
Gilbert is far more versatile and definately better than Cancellara this year

Like Libertine Seguros I'm gonna go a little bit off-piste and actually shove Cadel forwards as my choice.

He wasn't the most successful rider this year, but I can think of few riders who tried to wear that rainbow jersey with as much honour as he did. Every one else, quite rightly, seemed to ride for personal glory, however many wins they bagged. Something about Cadel made me think that this year he kinda was riding with a dogged determination for the jersey's sake.

The image of a mud-covered Cadel carrying the rainbow fabtric to Giro glory is one that can sit amongst the many classic racing images that we reel out to celebrate all that made our sport great over the ages, without blushing.

For that alone he gets my vote as Rider of the Year.

Thor will have a tough act to follow if he wants to wear it a proudly.

Plus it would be nice if he "wins" at least something soon, now he's a magic pony without rainbow colours again. Before he slips back into the anonymous eternal #2 role.

[I don't expect that btw]

voted for Contador, I dislike the guy but he certainly IS the rider of the year, bestest example of the sport, the fans, and the fair-weather insipid nature of the chatters on this site!

So just because Cadel won a few things while wearing something he won last year makes him an instant winner?

I'd say 2006 and 2007 were way better years for the ones who were wearing the rainbow jersey.

yep, rider of the year got busted... rather silly notion that, even if there are 11 others that seem to miss that point

I like Gilbert but I tend to agree with you. Cancellara's wins were bigger and in more dominant fashion, imo.

Anyway, I think the top 5 guys this were:

Contador (unless his results become vacated, but for now I'd have to vote for him)
Cancellara
Nibali
Gilbert
JoRod

Vino would be my #6.

Unless there's someone else who has won two monuments and a world championship this year, I'm voting Cancellara. Nibali is close, with his giro and vuelta. If he had stayed upright in Lombardia, and managed to drop Gilbert, i would probably have voted for him.

You miss the bigger problem with this poll. You cant vote for Hushovd because only 5 riders were nominated out of a possible 10 (though tbf, im not sure if Thor would have made the 10)

Weird thing that Gilbert has beaten Cancellara in every ranking this year (Pro Tour, CQranking, he would even have easily won the UCI Road Worldcup if that still existed). But don't let me distract you with silly things like facts.

Still, Cancellara did the RvV-PR double which is like totally without predecent. Oh no, wait, that happened 3 times in the last 8 years and without Devolders little stunts, Boonen would have probably achieved that a couple of times quite easily, since those races are always about the same 5 riders.

And yet Cancellara won the most important ranking of all. This poll. But dont let me distract you with silly things like facts ;)
