Voyons donc..
[/DEVIS]
Normally next week (January 11) Jumbo visma will present their team and schedule for each rider.

No. A fluke doesn’t predict future success, most unexpected results do (somewhat).

Bota Lume’s 2020 Giro was unexpected, but not a fluke.
For some it was an unexpected result sure, but for the top 2 it definitely looks like a fluke.

They didn't end up top 2 because of luck, which is the definition of a fluke, but rather because they were the 2 strongest in that Giro. A guy like Pereiro winning the Tour, that was a fluke. Not this.

If it's an insane outlier in their results in a COVID wrecked season that saw half the favorites go out with COVID and especially if the top 3 of the lot don't podium a GT again I'm gonna call it a big fluke.

You still have to have the ability to pedal quite hard.

I think some posters are too hung up on what luck means. The results were a statistical fluke... that means it was due to chance (or luck) and not predictive of future results. Whether or not they were the 2 strongest riders in that race is irrelevant.
Pereiro was also the 2nd strongest rider of the 2006 Tour and strongest who wasn't disqualified. That's what the GC says and the rest of what happened are meaningless details. All flukes.

This comes closer to my definition of a fluke as well.

In my opinion it is still based on skill to a large extend. It is almost impossible to win a GT based on mostly luck.

however, with the last condition added I can understand the term fluke being used. But not at the moment after only one season has passed.

Yeah, the Pogacar stuff is a bit undignified. I can see why he’s annoyed about Colbrelli and Caruso though.
It’s really surprising that Colbrelli has gone 5 years since riding the Giro. With his enhanced status as a monument winner and European Champion you would have thought he would have got a say in his schedule making it even more surprising he is not going to his home grand tour.

I believe the term bollox is more accurate than fluke.

Even from the team’s point of view it’s weird. He would get constant tv camera attention and big publicity generally at the Giro this year. And it’s not as if they have to protect his form for a Tour GC tilt.

How it wasn't luck? Three of the big favourites were out. Thomas crashed, Yates and Kruijswijk got COVID. They also got one of the best domestique performances in the last decade with Dennis to help them out. Neither of them have a good enough ITT to be contenders in a good field.
If both Pog and Rog would be out at the Tour, Vingegaard would be considered a fluke winner. But I would still value him higher as GC contender simply because he has a much better ITT and he would at least beat Carapaz.

Why do you assume it's a team's choice?
He's primarily a classic rider and as such he has to hit peak shape in early spring, which means he would have a hard time being still competitive in May. It's much more convenient to have some rest and build a second peak for the Tour.

My educated guess is that Colbrelli prefers riding the Tour, otherwise he would have done the Giro at least once since joining WT. The last time he rode the Giro he had no other option, because he was still with Bardiani.

It's also amusing how nobody in Italy ever gave a sh*t about Colbrelli riding the Giro (Vegni included), but now that he has won the Euros and Roubaix everybody suddenly knows who he is and he's morally obliged to come.
Meanwhile here we are, civilised men of culture who only care if Il Giro is in the bag.

On the men's side the most obvious pick for the stag win today is probably Spitsov, Roethe is clearly below his best. It's gonna be interesting to see if the weight loss pays of for Calle on this stage.

What stage today? And do you think it's anyone's target for this year?
