It's ridiculous to change the course for anything short of force majeure this shortly before the race. What a farce.
plus, there is a strong local disgust of altering what is a "preserved area", so they are putting some sort of special asphalt($$$) that is easy to removed afterwords..!?
The word was that they'ld asphalt only some 3MTS wide in order to let the TT goes smoth and they'ld block that same part with barriers to "force" the RR to go through the cobbles...

The UCI marshall(!?) here is a portuguese women... she is in charge and calling the shots of everything...

maybe the UCI wasn't involved in the decision, but the very IOC noticed it & requested the chance in surface to avoid further/ potential complains

How can the UCI force whoever's in charge of roads in Brazil to pave a road?

By the way, that Portuguese UCI commisaire would be Isabel Fernandes.

Well... there is local, state and federal authorities witch makes a mess to resolve things. Some roads are local, others federal and so on.. all eyes on "us" so if any sport complains they go out of their way to try to fix(!?) what is "fixable". Btw FIFA was way worst. They even demand change of local+federal law to allow alcohol inside the stadiums since Inbev were/is one of their biggest sponsors...
The latest of "friction" between UCI x local rules is the removal of "speed-bumps" on top of the Vista Chinesa. They were big and for a world tour race, descending in a break at 70/80km/h, were indeed dangerous. But VERY useful to slow local traffic. A lot more simple to resolve and It's already gone..
The only "not new" surface is going to be going up the 1st part of the "Canoas circuit", witch is old concrete...
Im still curious to know how they going to film the last climb/descend. If the camera-motos works, fine. But is under dense tree line and heli will be useless...

In today's cycling it seems only sprinters and climbers matter, *** all else. How many hilly stages have there been in the Tour this year? Or the WC at Qatar and not even using the windy sections...

At least Omloop het Nieuwsblad, Dwars door Vlaanderen and Strade Bianche will be WT next year, so the point system won't be as unbalanced as it used to be. But then there's still the problem of stage races like the Tour of Poland giving as much points as a Monument. And then there's cycling fans why try to argue the field in the cobbled classics are weak because the riders don't have as many points as climbers.

Most likely Froome will win the double or Valverde after doing a ridiculous super long peak (Giro + Tour + Olympics). Not looking forward to any of it.

According to Belgian newspapers Laurens de Plus will be the fifth guy for Belgium (next to Gilbert, GVA, Wellens & Pauwels). The official squad will be announced tomorrow.

Laurens de Plus doesn't seem likely to me. He's still very young and he got easily dropped by Wellens and Gilbert at the Belgian Nats.

No Thomas De Gendt. Winning on the Mont Ventoux and a good time trial isn't good enough. De Plus is from Etixx, just like coach De Weert. The sponsor is more important than the quality of the riders.

Different bondscoach same ***. Once again more deserving riders are left home cause Lefevere needs his rider

Thomas De Gendt didn't really want to go, he's not a one-day racer.

he could have done the timetrial though.

Bakelandts also deserved to go over de Plus

De Gendt wasn't in the preselection, you can't select riders who aren't in that selection. And he never said he wanted to go so...
De Plus is talented but we all know the only reason why he is going to Rio is cause Lefevre wants his guy. Not gonna be the last time with Etixx minded De Weert as coach. Well, maybe the newspapers that reported it are wrong, we'll know soon enough.

Yes, De Gendt said in an interview that he prefers to go home after being away for long. De Weert said about him "You can't count on him" - which is harsh. I agree about Bakelandts.
