Rio Olympics 2016

I'm kinda excited to see the opening ceremonies tomorrow, they've become such a spectacle over the years, which I don't think is necessarily a good thing. Think my fave part is the parade of nations, but even that can take forever because there are so many countries and athletes taking part. Still, the various outfits and costumes can be interesting, which country will sport the ugliest outfit this year?

Besides cycling I want to catch some track and field, gymnastics, some water sports, and strangely enough fencing. Fencing I get to see only every four years, so cannot tell the difference between foil, épée and sabre. But still, it's such an exotic sport to me, a lot of the Olympic sports actually are, which for me makes them still worth watching.

A Russian diplomat reportedly tackled and killed a would-be robber near Rio's Olympic Park on Thursday morning local time.
In a statement to Fairfax Media, Rio Civil Police said the Homicide Squad confirmed the lawyer, who holds a vice-consul post in the Russian consulate, then wrestled with the assailant and, during the fight, the assailant's gun went off killing him.
Traffic robberies are common in Brazil and motorists are advised to keep their windows closed and doors locked. They are advised to not react or resist.

According to the source below, a group of slovenian cyclists was just passing by...

To make number of medals for an individual comparable across sports, I think we need to look at quantiles of the historical distribution of medals among medal winners. Of course, that will only work well for events that actually happen a few times so it's not going to be possible to really isolate the swimming factor from the Phelps being one of a kind factor when comparing his medal count to others.

I don't really want to watch the ceremony but as Brazil seems to be the one remaining country in the world to still have its own culture, with things like Bossa Nova, Samba and Forro, this will probably be the only olympic ceremony actually worth watching.

The medals from the cycling road race race going to be the first medals of the whole Olympics, right?

No. There's a shooting medal to be awarded first.

That's why I hate *** shooting. Really, no athletic ability whatsoever, not even a real *** sport, all it does is take away some cool honors of other sports, and I just die a little on the inside when I see that some country chose a shooter as flag bearer. What's next? Darts? Beer pong?

I'm still waiting for the introduction of e-sports ;)
The problem about shooting for me is that there seem to be so many different disciplines although it's always more or less the same. For someone who has never cared about shooting this seems a bit as if they would make 3 different cycling races, one 150, one 200 and one 250 km long.
I won't complain about the new disciplines though since climbing in 2020 means that austria will probably win a few medals :D

Cyclists won't be in the ceremony, am I right?
Kiriyenka, Grmay and Niyonshuti are flag bearers for Belarus, Ethiopia and Rwanda.

Interesting. Thought they'd all have a nice and long rest.

Since I got bored to death I stopped watching the parade. Most riders did not go, though, right?

I'm all for action sports at the Olympics, that stuff is great. Golf shouldn't be there, the rankings is based on earnings ffs. e-sports is the single most ridiculous suggestion people have come up with, I know some semi-pro e-sporter and he's promoting it like mad on all platforms but I really have to try hard to not facepalm every time he's talking about it.
