do you mean the frequency, or the margin? I've been thinking the same thing, especially when we were told that when skin suits disappeared the records wouldn't be broken for years.
looking at peaty taking nearly a second in just under a minute, that is a phenomenal improvement.

Ledecky easily smashing the best time by any human ever in that discipline too

Did anyone see the beach volleyball match between Cuba and Brazil yesterday? That was superb.
And omg Djokovic is out of the tennis tournament  . If Nadal somehow wins this it would be incredible after his season so far but right now there aren't so many top players left. Thats btw also the reason why I think Dominic Thiem is incredibly stupid to just skip the Olympics. Wawrinka and Federer don't participate, I doubt that Nadal is in top shape (although I heard his first match was pretty good) and now Djokovic is already out. He still would have been an outsider but in Tennis everything can happen and under this circumstances a medal definitely would have been possible.

Is that what happened to Dominic Thiem? He just skipped Olympics? Wow. Didn't know that and I was guessing he burnt out, overplayed himself or was injured -- he's disappeared from the draws recently.

Watched a little of Rafa's match -- he looked sharp. Andy Murray vs Rafa Nadal final would be good.

Well, other than PEDs, obviously, swimming is a sport that may lend itself to big advances through technique. In cycling, the big factor that has to be overcome, at least on the flat, is air resistance. In swimming, it's the resistance of the surface of the pool. If you go completely underwater, you can move faster--hence the rules on how far you can stay underwater on the dive and on turns--but you can also move faster if you can get above the surface. Therefore, anything that improves buoyancy without adversely affecting performance in other ways can improve times.

But it should also be noted that not all records fall that quickly. The winning time in the men's FS relay last night was well off the record they set in 2008. In fact, in London, only one WR was set in men's swimming. Most of the current WR were set at the WC in 2009, when I believe those special suits were allowed.

Tennis is a sport I just don't see belonging in the Olympics. Basketball either, ever since NBA stars and pros entered at least. I'm puzzled why rhythmic gymnastics is there, same with trampoline, though you never see them anywhere else I guess. I'll barely let BMX slide, though I can see why some don't want it. The one sport that really needs to not be there though is golf. Is golf even a sport?

Of course, I'm one who doesn't like judged events being considered part of the medal count. I think they belong in their own category. Like exhibition sports.

I agree that those sports don't belong, but the new sports for 2020 are considerably worse - baseball/softball (yay, the USA really, really needs more medals!), karate (I'm unconvinced martial arts need a place in the Games), roller sports (what is this, the 1980s?), surfing (hard for me to take seriously, frankly, and not really that interesting to watch), and sport climbing (surely proper sport climbing is done out on real mountains, not on fake courses?). Yet squash, which I think could be fairly telegenic if the coverage is presented properly, is still out. As is tug-of-war. Which is indefensible.

Climbing is a great sport and competitions are afaik usually on fake courses. Watch some clips, that sport can be extremely impressive sometimes.

OK, I didn't know that. Climbing is definitely the best of the new sports by a long way.

Dutch gymnast Yuri van Gelder was kicked out the Olympics by NOC NSF for reportedly going out after qualifying for the finals on the Rings. It's reported he left the Olympic village in the evening, and didn't return untnil the morning. He has a Brazilian girlfriend, so likely he visited her, and confessed to consuming alcohol.

Be was basically kicked out for 'disobeying the rules' of the Olympic team. They basically say they had no choice. But they had. They could've let him compete. But apparently NOC NSF needs to have this holier than thou attitude to kick an athlete out who's done nothing against the rules of the sport itself. Makes me cringe

Do you know if he had any chance of doing well? It does seem singularly ridiculous and puritanical.

Surfing doesn't belong at the Olympic because it's not what surfing is about - very little of surfing has anything to do with competition with others. Others, including myself, find it very entertaining to watch.
Squash is irrelevant - all the courts where I live have closed, though it may be different in other parts of the world. I've never found it interesting to watch anyway.

I don't really follow gymnastics, but he's the former euro and world champ, but I don't think he was a favourite for a medal, but then it's gymnastics and a lot of *** can happen in a final like that.
