Rio Olympics 2016

The Aussies gave a good show, a nice run, but just fell a little short. Nowadays, people forget that the Aussies have more than one or two NBA players on their roster. So far they seem like they are the 2nd best team in the tourney. No surprise if they win a medal, based on form and confidence.

Thrilling bout in the women's foil in the fencing, from 0-3 to 7-3 then 7-6, before 12-8 with 35 seconds to go, then 12-10 with 14 seconds, and 12-11 with just 3 seconds. Di Francisca lost, and the russian world champion whose name I have forgotten (sorry) edged it.

Uh-oh, we have another controversy:

The credibility of Olympic swimming, already suffering from spats and doping scandals, has been further damaged by serious discrepancies in the entry times of a number of competitors.

The Olympic entry lists show many of the swimmers competing in Rio achieved their entry times at the World Aquatics Championships in Kazan in August 2015. In nine cases the entry times listed do not match the times recorded at those championships. Another eight are listed as having achieved entry times in events in which they did not compete or were disqualified from. The 17 athletes are from 16 different countries, and include 11 men and six women.

Kenya picked Hamdan Bayusuf. He is one of the 17 swimmers whose entry time for Rio has changed. Bayusuf’s time for the 100m backstroke was listed as 59.99sec, achieved in the first heat in Kazan on 3 August, 2015. The results sheet from that race shows his time was 1min 07sec. A Fina representative showed the Guardian the original nomination forms that listed Mohamed’s qualifying time as 1min 07sec. The representative said Fina had no idea how the wrong time of 59.99sec appeared on the entry list.

Swimming notes:

In one of the 100 FS heats, a woman finished in 1:05.7. That sure sounds clean to me. When I was younger, I could beat that time easily.

Going into tonight, the U.S. had medalled in 15/16 swimming events. They failed to medal in one of the finals tonight, and got shut out of another final that will be raced tomorrow.

Peavy won the 100 breastroke by more than 1.5 seconds. In the 200 breaststroke, the time difference between first and 8th was well under one second.

Remember that in the 4 x 100 FS relay, Phelps did a 47.1 split? Assuming a 0.7 second reaction time, that would be 47.8. His teammate Nathan Adrian, defending champion in the 100 FS, took the bronze tonight with 47.8. Phelps, not a sprinter by any means, and not a FS specialist, would have actually been in the mix in that race.

I'm tangentially follow a few things.

Swimming: One of our best shots at medals. So far it's been 2012 all over; close but no cigar!

Rowing: Well, when your country has a boat known as "the gold four" it's gonna get some coverage in the media.

Handball: Hopefully they guys'll do better than at the European championships...
Yeah they also should medal with Annika and maybe simon in the mtb"fingers crossed

spent the early hours watching the beach volleyball, never really paid much attention to the sport before(apart from the obvious) but I really enjoyed it. Some great action and close games. Plus when you have beautiful ladies like Verge-Depre and Slukova its an obvious bonus! :D

I figured I didn't need to point out that of course I'm also following cycling. Hopefully the track people can also get some medals, since that's where the hope for cycling medals were originally planned, Birdsong was a nice bonus.

There's been apathy on both sides about winning for Fognini and Murray. Guessing... Andy will come through this one.

I used to love watching women's gymnastics (when I was younger, and when I was much younger I used to take part in it), but now, after the team competitions, I'm just plain damn bored with it. So bring on the track and field...

I think it'll be highly amusing, for all the wrong reasons. ;)

Wow, Fidschi is destroying britain in the rugby final. Was that expected?
Edit: 29:0 after one half? That really can't be as expected, right?

Probably not as one-sided as the scoreline, but Fiji were massive favourites for the gold. They said in the build-up around 90% of the adult population of Fiji would be watching this final, its huge over there.

GB have done well to get a silver, but this was one match too far. First Olympic medal for Fiji I believe?

If it were union then it would be the other way round ;)

But Fiji were favourites in the eyes of all but the most jingoistic fans. Their athleticism is great, and offloading is a joy to watch. By this much definitely not though. 25-15 was the most probable score before kick off. This was an awesome performance though. And it's not like the score flatters fiji.
