This is a sport changing event that will clearly have a bearing on its future development.
Why would it? Portet d'Aspet didn't disappear after Casartelli passed away and neither did Passo del Bocco when Weylandt met his end there. I don't think we'll never see a descent finish into La Punt again, much less that descent finishes are going to suddenly disappear after today.

Have either descents been used in a place where the race was on?

He's no longer with us...I thought it'd be a good idea to do a sort of a tribute thread for him. I'm guessing i'm not the only person here who is devastated by the news. And lets be honest, he was probably getting a thread sooner or later, he was a great talent. I have a lot of happy memories of Gino from pro-cycling manager so this one does hit rather hard.

Lets remember the good stuff about him. Like that time he donated money to charity for every rider he beat at he Vuelta... He finished 5th on GC.

& of course, throwback time to that Giro stage win. He was due to win a lot more races. Alas...

Imo , completely unnecessary to have a descent at speeds of 100kph to end the stage . That brings extra risk with it .
It's really sad, and cycling remains an incredibly dangerous sport. But at the end of the day, the placement of the descent isn't really relevant, since this happened to a rider who wasn't involved in the fight at the front. It could have happened anywhere. I think it's unfair to put this on the organizers as if they shouldn't have had the finish after a descent.

My thoughts are with his family and close ones, who must have gone through a horrible time since his crash was first reported. I'm also thinking about the families of other riders whose lives came to an end in a similar way.

Some like Egan Bernal, Kai Reus, Stig Broeckx and Amy Pieters have been fortunate to survive, albeit with different levels of long-term damage, while others like Magnus Sheffield yesterday walk away with "minor" injuries, but that sadly wasn't the case for Gino Mäder.

I expect the stage to be ridden, but neutralised in his honour.

I dunno. Like Sheffield went off at the same corner and there's a chance the presence of vehicles put Mader off so that would mean this descent and the fight at the front is the reason here.

Its so unbelievably sad . A young talent alive and vibrant yesterday is gone

I don't think the descent compared to others is particularly dangerous

We dont know what happened but that rockery , several meters down the decent with the drop and the rocks seems to be the difference between Sheffield and Gino Maders falls ...if you hit that at speed esp a sheer fall onto the rocks ?

I dont know of course . How do we make all these things safer

I just wish I could turn back time to yesterday

Terrible, what a tragedy. Was fearing the worst after the lack of positive news but this has still hit really hard. My thoughts are with his family today. RIP.

Still remember his joy in a interview after his incredible performance in 2023 Paris Nice (Pogacar's first win).

I was speechless when I read this news. I first got to know of him when he almost won "that" stage in PN, and have been following him since. Great rider. This is very sad.

Rest in Peace Gino!
