I don't mind saying that I shed tears watching that.

Romain was the first rider I made athread about. This thread, obviously. I fell in love with him as a rider back then, and I love him still. A true racer, and a principled one throughout. An intelligent and thoughtful man too.

Enjoy your retirement Romain... thank you for the memories, and my avatar of course. I look forward to seeing you on the TNT coverage of the Tour.

Second and third at the Tour
Second at the Worlds
Second and third at Liège
Second at Strade
Second and third at Dauphiné

For a long time I thought that a bigger win than his four Tour stages was going to come eventually, but sadly it never did. Good thing he's French, because it means he gets to go down in history as the best home rider at the Tour this century instead.

Breathe...Lombardia...exhale...6 GT stage wins....breathe....1'17" time gap to the GT winner...exhale...I disagree, and who cares, in the end Alaf' rules...

Romain was more than a stat sheet anyway. As brave as he is/was, let's not forget how smart he is/was. That World Championship was not for him, Alaf' was the designated leader, Pinot may have been the strongest French rider that day, yet Romain was the last French man standing, and he went for the win, no less. He made the best of the situation, push the finish line 20-30 maybe 40 meters back, he wins...so close.

The second place at Le Tour was a masterful display of The Art of Cycling, from 5th to 2nd in a genius move. With Prat d'Albis and FdJ, these are the only two times that a French team has dictated GC action in about 40 years. It takes great champions, great leaders to make it possible. Romain is/was both.

I liked this generation, the "nazes" as Hinault called them, the losers. They were winners if you ask me. Ask the fans and their peers.

That bike arch was so well deserved.
