Pogacar didn't race RvV last year, and Van der Poel won 3 cobbled classics including the 2 monuments with very long solos.

Pogacar was also the favorite for Sanremo, dropped a huge Cipressa record and yet he didn't drop Van der Poel.

There's a lot we don't know, there's a lot of small variables that consistently get ignored, and frankly there's no way to know, and it's not some personal insult to think Van der Poel is the favorite like some seem to think it is.

I might be approaching this from a different angle because I am seeing some Pog fans trying to downplay his chances. I assume that's "just in case" he loses.

I'm not having it. This race has to be his first mega objective of the season because unlike MSR he's won this one before. Anything other than a win would be a major disappointment IMO.

This is a more serious try. But this is how they should have done it the first time around.

MSR was the first mega goal, he wants to win them all. That's why he added PR to his schedule.

Not much order was there, about 50 riders missing and multiple attacks and random groups still getting little gaps off the front. If Armstrong or Hinault were knocking about there would be punches thrown.

Hopefully that was just the opening salvo and the punches will come later, it would be sensational viewing, what we all want to see.

I mean if Pog fails to win MSR, Flanders or Roubaix, then he's been wasting his time before Liège (aka an easy open goal for him).

Racing monuments and losing them doesn't do much for Pog's aura. So yeah, I say anything other than a win here and he'll be mega disappointed.

Mathieu is not easy to crack in those three races.
