I think if he'd smashed into the ground face-first, and was currently on his way to hospital, then laughing would definitely have been wrong. He didn't, he's still in the race, and looks quite okay.

The lead group will have over 5 min at the first kwaremont passage. That is not really bad. Of course they will have no chance, but did the other lead group have such a gap in the last years?
