Maybe. But with breakaways the winner is usually someone for whom a victory is the highlight of their season, often their entire career. That one moment theyve been waiting for some of us its very enjoyable to see what it means to them. The big guys dont tend to get into breakaways.

With sprints its just another guy whose had minimum 10 victories already this season. Another victory for someone who knows exactly what it feels like and is already turning an eye to the next day.

People generally seem to me to support those who are famous. Yey i heard of him i hope he wins.

Me i support underdogs and while i like the sprinters and am happy to see the smiles on their faces, i feel it is much more beautiful when one of the guys who spend all their lives domestiquing for others, get their taste of the champaign.

Thats just me. Each his own.
honestly, there is nothing better than that.

today was epic!

OK, here's how it is. France is not Italy. Italy is on or near a plate fault and is far more hilly than France (Italy has volcanoes and earthquakes - France doesn't). They are never too far from a decent hill.

By contrast 60-70% of France is generally pancake flat. The Tour is a part of French heritage so they have to spread it around.

Also, some people will tell you will tell you that a four man breakaway is better than a bunch sprint. It's really not. In the breakaway, either someone will attack with 5k to go while the others look at each other, or the person everyone picked 50k ago wins a really lame sprint. In a bunch sprint you get many teams muscling for position for 15k. It's generally one for the connoisseur.

I don't understand your point. Italy is hilly so we should have more sprint stages? Huh?

All I know is this. When a grand tour is on the horizon I go and look through the stage profiles and decide which days are must watch stages. When i look at the last couple years Giro stages, it is hard for me to pick stages that I can skip. When I look at a tour de france, I usually only need to watch the last 10km for about a third of the stages.

With all due respect; Wouter etc, the Giro has never interested the Schlecks, so why worry, if your boys are only ever going to send a token team?
Stick to California, be happy and don't worry that the Giro is too tough.

Lol people seem to think because I love the Schlecks and the TdF I must hate or not care about the Giro but it's not true ... I love the Giro and it's because I love it that I feel I have to speak up and crash your Zomegnan appreciation party.

The general idea also seems to be that bigger (longer, harder, crazier) is better which I guess is also normal since this is an anglophone forum so there might be some cultural differences concerning that question ;)

Also I do think qualifying the riders on LEOPARD TREK's Giro team "token riders" is an insult to them ... you might see them as such but I assure you the team doesn't. They had a lot of bad luck before the Giro with Bennati crashing out, otherwise they would have had a good shot at winning some stages. Wegmann is also an experienced GT man and it would have been interesting to see how Klemme would have done in his first GT. I don't know what shape Zaugg was in but he could have maybe done a top-10. And even if they hadn't won any stages they would have animated the race. People still make the mistake to see LEOPARD TREK as "Team Schleck", which it is not. All those guys were there because they are good riders and earned their spot, not because the team somehow needs to fill the slots until the TdF. We have seen by their performance all year that they also care about the little races and the races that don't include the Schlecks or Cancellara, this would not have been any different at the Giro.

Next year they'll have 3000 kms of time trial. Unfortunately they'll also add the Zoncolan, so Tony Martin still can't win it.

Grabsch will participate in next year's Giro, so Tony wouldn't have a chance anyway.

Never been a fan of Zomegnan, plus by reading the article they talk about Silvio Martinello whom might get into the "team" taking care of next Giros.
Couldnt make me happier.

What a shame. Zomegnan has lifted the Giro out of the gutter. Under his direction it went from a local affair where guys like Garzelli, Cunego and Savoldelli won, who could barely top-10 in the Tour even if they wanted to, to an international race with some of the biggest upcoming and current stars of cycling, with a course that elevates the race above all others in the eyes of all sane cycling fans.

The last couple of years the Giro has usually been the best, or among the best races of the year. That wasn't always the case. Let's hope we don't go back to those days.

Personally I won't miss Giro starts from such far-flung Italian towns like Amsterdam.Where next was he aiming for,Reykjavik?
