I was going to link to the place that I referenced above, but in browsing around I found out that he sold his business, and is playing full time! :) I don't know anything about the the new owners or the new Podiatrist. They also have a pedorthist now too.

Great point about consistency with every day shoes and runners.

I do love the feel of low/zero drop but due to my extreme pronation I need a good deal of correction. None of the low and zero makers offer a trail runner with the stability I need.
Check out Lems Trailhead (4 mm drop...21/17 stack). They aren't specifically a 'motion control' shoe, but the EVA is pretty firm which keeps your foot from rolling as much as less dense foam.

I don't love them because they are so-so for my left foot. I haven't even worn them for a while that's why I didn't think about them until now. They are kind of my weight room shoe. Who knows, they might be good for your feet. Finding a retail location is tough though. Sometimes REI has them in store.

I didnt even realize I started this thread. How time has passed.

Without training, I was able ro run 5 km in 17 min 10 years ago. Was playing a ton of football, but still.

Today, I went for my first run in YEARS without having done any sport like basketball, football, tennis etc. that could help me. Basically I only rode my bike.

It was obnoxiously bad. 5 km, 30 min. I honestly didn't feel like I could go any faster, my legs were completely exploded already in the first km. My HR was completely fine as I would have suspected.

Ill try to go on a few of those 5 km runs a week and in a month, I should be able to do 5 km, 25 min. Hopefully! Always felt that going around that mark is decently acceptable when youre not running a ton.

I don't use a time/distance reference anymore because it would just be depressing. When I run, I run for 30 minutes...who knows how far I go.

KB, how is your return to running going? Did you find some new shoes that work well?
Hey man, yeah I got some Saucony Ride in the end. The heel rolls very well with my foot. Was going reasonably well until I got sick, then I had to stop for a couple of weeks so going to pick it back up again this week. Nothing big so far, just a few 23 minute 5km runs to get back on it. Legs really feeling it at first but getting used to it again now.

Also, it’s insane that when I first really got into trail running instead of road running Kilian Jornet has just hit the scene and was dominating, I take a 15 year break, come back, and look who wins UTMB?! Dude is another level.

Are you still at it?

Yeah, kind of. Temprorary health stuff got in the way in of me properly getting back into it and I'm only just back to proper riding and training. I'm also transitioning out of pure cardio stuff, cycling and running, and going back to some of the strength based stuff I used to do for contact/fight sports, so I'm only running every couple of weeks.

I have ditched recording the runs though and I'm enjoying just getting out and running on feel.

I’ve been using Saucony Ride for a year or so now. They’re a bit firm but I’ve stuck with them for a few pairs.

Anybody following the Barkley Marathons?

I am hoping Karel Sabbe will be the 16th finisher (ever). Last year he was the last man standing but had to give up in the fourth (of five) loops after getting lost (and started hallucinating) and asking for directions to a trash can which he thought was an old lady.

I’ll take a peek. Isn’t that race completely off the grid and hard to follow?

Got into a bit of running due to Olympics. Once a very fast runner when playing football almost daily, I have sucked for many, many years despite still being in quite good cycling shape. My goal is not to run any marathons or half marathons or anything like that, but simply to have a very fast and effective training route with job and everything in daily life to support riding which requires much longer time (generally do around 2-3 hours outdoors). Therefore Im generally just running 5 km at threshold (don't know what its called in running terms, you know what I mean) and my goal is to get down below 20.00. Im at around 21.30 right now without going super full gas, so it should be very doable.

Quite fun. I was at around 25-26 at the beginning pushing to the limit, so I have already seen quite big improvement, so who knows, maybe I can get it to 17-18 min which was my peak effort at 16 years old or so. I imagine that going from 21 to 18 will be a lot harder though..

Age and past injuries (if you have any from running because running is so jarring to the whole body, as opposed to riding a bike) may play a factor, but good luck on your running endeavors!

Keep us posted on your progress, btw.! :)

17-18 min is pretty solid for not specifically training for it, even with the football.

It definitely is, and I have a hard time believing I was actually able to do that back in the day. I guess I was also about 10 kg lighter, so thats probably a very good reason. Im doing a relay race (DHL-stafet, a nationwide relay in Denmark) in a week, so trying to peak and drop the 20 min bomb on that day, its 5x5km so actually perfect for what I wanna achieve with my running.

Did a couple of 3.30/km for fun and a bit of distance (thats 7 km in total, lol, its distance to me).

Felt great. No clue whether thats good training for a 5 km all out, but it kinda makes sense to me.. somewhat. Im gonna look more into differents kind of training actually starting with Hicham El Guerrouj, my goat runner, and see what he had up his sleeve when he was preparing for his races, because thats honestly a bit more fun to play around in training a bit more than just run 5 km threshold.

I go between him and Bekele.

For motivation check out the 2003 WC 5k between Guerrouj, Bekele and Kipchoge or Bekele’s 12:37 WR from 2004 that stood till 2020, completely effortless and he paced most of it himself.

One of my favorites to watch is the finish of the Great North Run in 2013 which included Bekele and Farah duking it out in the finale of a HM at their peak also with Gebrselassie in tow.

Im not an expert on distance running at all, I follow Total Running Prodcution and end up watching a lot of his vids. Im especially keen on that exact era with Haile (I know he was before), Guerrouj, Bekele, Ngeny, Kipchoge and those lads, feels like to me that definitely was the golden era of the middle-long distance running and then of course the sprinting videos he posts. And Guerrouj just pushes all my buttons, I love his finish and he was just unbeatable for a long time even though he only won one gold! Winning that 5k in Athens against peak Bekele was insane IMO.

I just did 285 watts for an hour indoor as a spinning instructor (could prolly go above 300 at a steady pace without talking), and I have never been able to do that before, so Im definitely hyped now and gunning for a great time. I just know I'll start to quickly lol. Ill keep you posted.

We have a local relay in the city I live where the distance is a bit shorter, 3.9 to be exact. It's quite hilly (Strava says 67 altitude metres) and this year (last week), I managed to go below 15 minutes (14:41). That was pretty great, I wonder how that would translate into a flat 5k but it must be close to 18 minutes (I have never been below 19).

Apparently, I have a very good technique downhill and on the biggest descent I felt like Pidcock in a group with Latour, de la Cruz, Zakarin and the likes. It was touch and go not to fall but definitely helped on the time.

Rono was the guy for me: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Rono

Breaking records!

Because he ran for WSU (in the region where I grew up) I was probably more aware of him than others.

"In May 1982, Rono won the Lilac Bloomsday Run in Spokane, chugging through the 12 kilometers – he would admit later – with a powerful hangover. When he headed to Europe to run that summer, he did so with a pronounced beer gut that had meet promoters reticent to have him race. In a July 5,000 in Finland, he was lapped and failed to break 15:40.

Yet he somehow raced himself back into shape in meets across the continent, and by September broke his 5,000 world record in a race in Knarvik, Norway."

(NOTE: I also ran this edition of Bloomsday...not quite as fast as HR).

I'm also a big Prefontaine fan, but I was too young to really appreciate him until it was too late.:(

Tried super shoes for the first time and beat my 12 year old half marathon PR by 2 mins on a random tempo run today, in pretty warm conditions. The 4% claim is definitely legit for me at least. Only got them to be on a level playing field for races but it feels silly.
