Rono was the guy for me: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Rono

Breaking records!

Because he ran for WSU (in the region where I grew up) I was probably more aware of him than others.

"In May 1982, Rono won the Lilac Bloomsday Run in Spokane, chugging through the 12 kilometers – he would admit later – with a powerful hangover. When he headed to Europe to run that summer, he did so with a pronounced beer gut that had meet promoters reticent to have him race. In a July 5,000 in Finland, he was lapped and failed to break 15:40.

Yet he somehow raced himself back into shape in meets across the continent, and by September broke his 5,000 world record in a race in Knarvik, Norway."

(NOTE: I also ran this edition of Bloomsday...not quite as fast as HR).

I'm also a big Prefontaine fan, but I was too young to really appreciate him until it was too late.:(

Rono v Ovett v Malinowski - 1978 2 miles race.

3 great runners.

Along with CX I really enjoy XC running , the sport and for personal activity.
No nonsense like Strava or timing for myself , running just to release tension , enjoying being out amongst nature, enjoying the lightness of my tread, my toes digging in on steep uphills. I keep well within threshold ,meeting friends along the way I aim to look completely unflustered.
Today however I did wear a Garmin a mere 7km took me 47min but that included 300m elevation gain , slowest km 9.08 with most up/down steep gradients , fastest km 4.50 for the final flatter stretch.
Any other runners here?

I used to run and have the bad knees to prove it. Also had some nasty shin splints at one point... I really loved running though and miss it dearly, like you I enjoyed the solitude and just getting away from real life while running on nice, treelined trails.

Not sure what nationality you are, but if American will you be running any Thanksgiving fun runs? I really liked those and still have some Turkey Stuffer shirts in my closet years later!

Thank You , here in UK we don't recognise Thanksgiving! As to running my knees may complain a little afterwards but life is short, I must get the most out of it.
While I ran 7km this AM, PM I hiked 25km so a good active day.

Well done, I envy you! (I took up bicycle riding because running just wasn't possible anymore.)

Just to explain the Thanksgiving runs here are usually 5k or maybe even 10k, and they take place on the morning of Thanksgiving. Rain or shine you run so you can stuff yourself with turkey + trimmings, and watch some NFL games later. Loads and loads of people show up and some even wear fun costumes, it just shows how dedicated runners, or even walkers, are despite the fact it's a national holiday. You have something like that in the UK?

Thank You once more and look after your knees! No we don't have holiday runs here in the UK however what is becoming increasingly popular are park runs , 5k round local parks where anyone can enter. There is no fee and anyone registering receive an official time. The idea is that these are 'fun' runs but reality is that they are very competitive. I prefer to run on my own.

Did you watch the recent New York Marathon? what amazing races and all the better without pacers!

I hear ya, the Turkey Stuffer Thanksgiving 5k is actually the only group run I ever did because it was just fun to participate with fellow runners who rolled out of bed and were ready on the start line at 8:30am while others were probably sleeping in because it's a holiday, but otherwise I always ran either alone or with my dad. And yes, like your park runs some runners take the Turkey Stuffer very, very seriously even though it's supposed to be just a fun run - you know the ones, the ones who never smile and are just constantly looking at their watch during the entire race...

I missed the NY marathon because brain fart, but I usually do at least catch the highlights from the big races. Have you ever run a marathon? I never even considered it cause I thought I'd get bored with that kind of distance...

You look out for your knees, too, btw., think longevity!

You're kind, my knees are fortunately strong I have jogged/run every day this year, mostly between 5 to 10km,once 31km which took some time, over fences through ditches and up steep climbs! My current BMI is 20.3 which should help my knees.

Don't think I will ever run a marathon most of all on the road.

Sometimes I think I enjoy watching running as much as cycling!

My favourite runners past and present-
Kathrine Spitzer
Mike McCloud
Charlie Spedding
Brendan Foster
Steve Ovett
Wayde van Niekerk
Sifan Hassan
Faith Kipyegon
Jakob Ingebrigtsen
Killian Jornet

While not a distance runner my fave runner was always Allyson Felix. And some more, I just can't remember their names right now.

Thought of some more runners I like or have liked in the past:

Gudaf Tsegay, Hicham El Guerrouj, Steve Prefontaine, Jakob Ingebrigtsen, Maria Mutola, Cathy Freeman, Sha'Carri Richardson, and I really liked Marion Jones and Regina Jacobs before they got popped. :tearsofjoy:

I like some of the female sprinters, but the guys are a little too macho for me, so I don't have a fave male sprinter.

I too loved Allyson Felix, what a competitor yet always gracious a true role model. I still have affection for Marion Jones despite some uncomfortable thoughts. Now where do I start with Sha'Carri? She really is an enigma, I love to see her win,I love to see her fail.

Also I have little time for male sprinters posturing, I admire Noah Lyles performances but relate better to the 'honesty' of distance runners.

Agreed. I don't follow any social media but I read on a running forum that a couple of the big name distance guys (can't remember which now) were trying to start some kind of a smack talk war on twitter or some such, and I thought how stupid! It's like, leave the smack talk to the sprinters because it's part of their show, but in distance it just looks silly.

Just remembered another runner I like, Laura Muir. I like that she's both a runner and also studied veterinary medicine, shows she loves animals, as do I.

Edit: remembered another one I really liked, Jeremy Wariner. Seemed like a rather quiet guy, but a terrific 400m runner.

Just been reading how Laura Muir's former coach was banned for malpractice it seems to was 'rather domineering' I had forgotten just how much of a class runner Wariner was.

Longer Run today , approx 17km in approx 1hr 35 mostly flat but 9 berg style climbs , most were so steep they contain steps (it's a park area) I was thinking how fortunate I am to take such a run in my stride, straight out of bed on a glass of water.

Back home I like to cool down submerging in a cold bath. This is more of a shock to the system in November compared with the summer.

Well done! Sounds like you could be one of those polar bear people who like to go for a dip in literally freezing water in winter... brrrrrrrrrrrr!

Except for when the surface was icy I always ran no matter the weather, what are your fave weather conditions? Mine were always overcast and about 70F.

Going back to Jeremy Wariner, and I've noticed you mentioned Wayde van Niekerk in your earlier post, would you consider the 400m a sprint? I think the line is a bit fuzzy because there is sprinting in the 400, but then there's some endurance involved, too. I certainly wouldn't consider it a pure sprint, so when I talk of sprinters I mean the flashy 100m guys and gals, or 200m at most.

Thanks! I like to think that I'm Hardy , I'm still wearing shorts 24/7 in November . As to running weather , I take conditions as they are but if it is very hot I would likely reduce the distance .I'm not keen on rain but if it starts raining mid run it makes little difference.

I would consider the 400m a sprint because there is so little tactical opportunity. Competitors sprint away from blocks and go full gas at speed they think can be maintained to the finish. As you write there is an element of endurance with the result often being determined by whom can hang on the longest.

Its good to see this thread get action again! As I've probably said in previous pages, I would never call myself a runner, but I have done a fair bit of running for fitness, both pre cycling and as off season training for cycling. Back in what seems like a different lifetime, I did quite a few 10-12 Ks to challenge myself. I did a marathon as a challenge/dare, and regretted ever step past 20 K. I've done a couple of off road half marathons as well. My destroyed old feet won't tolerate running now so I just don't.

In the past we've talked about shoes, I've been wearing Lems Primal Zen for a few years now as my walk around shoes because they just let my feet be my feet which allows them to be less angry. It hard to judge how they would be for running, but my guess is that they would be fine for easy 5 Ks.

Me too, all the running I have done and I don't consider myself to be a runner. I sometimes say 'jogging along I could one day break into a run' because I lack speed. I admire yourself for completing a full marathon, it's such a long way. One day I will run and run and see how far I get.

How do you get on with barefoot shoes? I hear the hype but I'm not a believer. I run around in various footwear, cheap runners, better runners and even my hiking boots.

My feet are much happier in minimalist shoes. At least for everyday use I am a full on believer. Zero drop is a big part of that, but also just not having anything that makes my feet do something. There is the catch though, because many 'barefoot' shoes have motion control, arch fillers, and other features that make them anything but barefoot. At the risk of sounding like an advertisement, the Lems Primal Zen have made a big difference for my feet. I wore Converse Chuck Taylor for many years, they are the original minimalist shoe. The toe box is too narrow though, which is what eventually got me to Lems.

IMO, big cushion/big drop shoes are hype, minimalist shoes never reached that level.

And that's what counts................I am really lucky to be able to wear any style without issue , it helps that I have narrow feet.

Growing up runners were much more minimalist with hardly any cushioning.
Then Nike came along upon a wave of change and athletic footwear became big business.

Yes, Nike certainly changed shoes in many ways (waffle, foam, air...), but the huge stack, huge drop trend in the last 10-15 years is all about Hoka, and everyone rushing to copy them. I tried Hoka in 2012ish because I thought that all of that cushion would help my grumpy feet, but it didn't, the 15 mm drop actually aggravated things.

I miss the days when it didn't matter what I slipped my feet into! :(

While not pure running, I did the Spartan Ultra this past Saturday. Around 38 miles with a bunch of obstacles. I can still barely walk today.
I did a hard charge, and a dirty dash (same idea as a spartan). The HC was 10 K, and the DD was 5 K so nothing like 38 miles, but the obstacles/features were crazy!

All of this talk about these event makes me blame moto and mountain biking a lot less for my hammered feet than I had been. :p

The DD might have been 5 miles, not 5 K, but still pretty short.
