Did they just throw away the GC here? What a weird move to just give 2 strong riders that gap

Depends on how much time they'll have at the finish, but I would expect that on the last hill of stage 5 if the likes of Pidcock, Wellens, Vlasov go all out, they gain some time on these two.

2/3rds of the rest is downhill, and they are against Ivan Romeo, the medium mountain plateau specialist.

The problem was they can only go as fast as Laporte can climb, and UAE don't seem to be too bothered about this.

UAE seem a bit bothered. They've spent Cosnefroy and Sivakov has been working for most of the climb. They just don't have enough guys. Visma and Q36.5 are also lacking a bit in domestiques.

They will have ton of time, they completely messed it up. Last stage is really not hard enough to make up lots of time.

I got the impression they were saving guys, only riding at the pace of their 4th rider, which would be fair with a normal route but the gap seems to be terminal with the tepid stages to come.

If there's enough doms left they could make up time in those last more uphill kilometers, but front group obviously wins. We'll have to see with how much time, but last stage is also not that hard as UNO X and Movistar will stay with their leaders and will be able to control till last climb.

If I'm someone who wants to win GC here, I start working myself in the end.

It's like they watched Mark Donovan's domestique work the other day and though hmm yes yes of course, though it's coming down a bit now. Not sure who is fastest, Leknussend has some good wins but afaik all from the breaks, same with the boy.
