I switched on during the descent, but read that Landa was good on the climb. What happened to him?

Gave it all on one attack and then got reeled in by Contador. Faded afterwards..

He attacked for a bit on the climb. AC dragged him back eventually. Wasn't quite there on the descent. I don't think he lost that much time in the end.

The wheelsucker won
Weird, I thought there was a Movistar rider who tried to win solo couple of minutes ago.

He got a gap on the descent.
I know but he didn't move a finger in the entire climb
There are no trophies for who spazzes out the most on a climb, getting reeled in every time and finishing last of the group.

Valverde absolutely owned that stage - incredible ride. Animated the climb, did most of the work on the run in, lead into the final km and not one rider could get around him in the sprint.
Well ofcourse not. None of the other riders in that group posses what can be called even a decent finish. Bad tactics from SKY not to attack in the last couple of kilometers.
Valverde was just too strong. He closed the attack from Reichenbach so easily, then controlled the race from the front; taking the racing line around the roundabout with 500m to go. Not sure what else Sky could have done by that stage. Poels even got on Valverde's wheel at the right time, but ended up going backwards.

Tbf, it doesn't matter for the GC if you finish first or last in the group you're in ;)

It matters for the stage win though.

We all know valverde in 15 years of cycling on 10kn climbs will never drop anyone on a climb while Contador has potential to drop everybody hence who tried. No one should blame valverde for the tatics on that climb not Contador. ( this is not directed at you ) but this site has too many duds who follow a certain cyclist too deep in detriment of rivals

Well, no disrespect to Reichenbach, but he's not the guy who should/can challenge Bala in such a finale. He has no explosivity, power on the flat and the mind of a winner.

I actually really expected something special from Izagirre in that final km. But i guess he still thinks he's riding for Movistar.

But apart from that, Bala was the best on the day. He's the best in these kind of finales for almost 15 years. But he didn't really animated the final climb. Contador did. Bala attacked at the moment everyone expected it.

Remember Froome is a master descender. He invented pedaling while sitting on the top tube.

Valverde had a 95% chance plus on that finale. Why is this being discussed ?
Well he only had a 95% chance becaue he is in incredible form. He had a 95% chance because he was able to drive the group on the flat, close down any attacks with ease and lead out the sprint from the front. It's being discussed because it was a really impressive performance. I guess it's taken for granted because he wins so often, but the top 9 were all very, very high quality riders - but one was absolutely head and shoulders above the others on this stage.

He hasn't got many more years left, so there won't be an unlimited amount of occasions left to appreciate such insane talent.

It wasn't an attack on valverde at all. His efforts alone to be the only Rider to respond on the wheel of Contador and then drop him for a bit is amazing and then push on so the third group didn't catch and still Sprint it. You can be the favourite in anything but still have to do it

Very true. I wonder why he had such an enthusiastic celebration at the end? I guess he felt a lot of pressure, knowing it was his stage to lose given his form and his sprint.

Upsets happen in every scenario. Here in Aus we have a horse that's on 15 in a row wins which is 3rd of all time. They are relieved more then celebrating every time now. Sometimes a single individual puts in a performance beyond belief. If valverde loses to Contador on a sprint one day even at 50 years old in a criterium it's almost a disgrace haha

Do you think Contador expected to win this stage?

Yes, Contador copied Froome, who copied Sagan, who copied Kwiatkowski, who copied Mohoric. Matej Mohoric is the original master descender!!

Looks like this Valverde guy is a good bike rider, who knew that... Seriously, this guy is just insane, there is no explanation other than that.
