But I can't really see why he would be following their instructions at this point.

Maybe something about his contract.

Failure to show up to a race when called up by the team may lead them to terminate his contract without any payment in the 4 months that are remaining.

He can say is injured but if the team doctor says he's fine, it could be a complicated legal battle.

It's shitty, but it's DSM we're talking about.

Basically the Canadian races were planned a long time ago and it was always the plan that he should ride them. But he's totally out of form (because of his saddle sores) and could't perform at the Worlds anyway.
