That's the random act of kindness that John wanted. Fantastic.

Haven't had the time to post much recently, but knew you would post this picture, so I came in to pay my respects again.

Maybe I am wrecked & emotional after a hard trainer session, but that picture, and the whole story behind it is beautiful. Even though not many of us knew the man, you can sometimes tell that a person has a good heart, just by what they post on these boards. The Swordsman has obviously stood out as that type of person - as evidenced by the fact that someone would go to the trouble to paint his handle on the road, for the cycling world to see.

Hats off to whoever did it. :)

What did he say?

He just mentioned his passing, his name, and his twitter name etc. Johns family I believe were watching that stage of the Vuelta, and I put the eurosport rip of the stage online that day so some were able to go back and rewatch it.

you can see the marking on the ground very breifly at the start of the red roadside banners for the 8km to go banner. 9m19seconds

Not sure where in the video Harmon mentions him

Nice of you to put that online...I watched the US broadcast on Universal and Todd and Steve missed it and so did I. Only when I got a tweet later and watched the replay did I see it.....so if his family was watching the American broadcast they would have had to know it was there to see it...

What a nice tribute and nice to alert the family of it.

I beleive they knew. Certainly one of his relatives was on twitter that day thanking people for their best wishes.

I'm considering unsticking this thread. As much as I don't want John's memory forgotten, there does come a time when to at least move on electronically in a sense. I just don't know when that is, only that no one has posted in this thread in almost a month.

Any and all thoughts are welcome.

I think you're right. It's true that he shouldn't be forgotte, but as you said yourself; maybe it's time to move on.
I also think we should try and look at it from his relative's PoV; imagine if any of them were members (or even just frequent lurkers) of this forum. Would they want to be constantly reminded of what happened every time they checked this place? For some reason I don't think so...

I am slowly catching up with the news and going-ons on the site over the last few months, and John's passing is the sort of news that you wish never existed in the first place. But I am glad that Alpe's post today brought it to my attention, in an upside-down sorta way.

It is also a reminder how nice it is to hear people talk about their (different and differing) passions, and how weird it is if their voice suddenly falls silent.

And although I didn't know him, it will be strange to no longer see his name appear from time to time, as he certainly was part of the worthwhile fabric of this place, to me anyway. The glimpses he gave suggested that he was a guy who got very passionate about things, which usually means someone worth knowing. If he will be missed here -and he will- I can only guess what gap he left elsewhere. My best wishes to those coming to terms with it.

This is rapidly turning into the ****test year I can remember in cycling.

More sad news last night, not a forum regular, but those on twitter may well know of @roadbikedave (he was @rab11dv or something beforehand).

Cylcled home from work last night and just after seven pm was involved in an accident in the city centre. He suffered from a heart condition, collapsed on the bike and crashed. He died later from his injuries.

Spoke with him many times on twitter, and sadly, although he lived only a few miles from me never got around to meeting him. I guess theres a lesson there.
