If they do loose their license it just shows what an amateur circus Pro cycling has become.

In what other sport does a team get relegated if an athlete is santioned for an offence he did while on another team? Especially after the season has started!

Could you imagine a Premire League club being relegated mid-season to the Championship because they lost their star striker and "surely wouldn't be able to compete in the league"? Of course not.

Finally but not least, for a sport that depends on sponsors to survive, what kind of message does it send to any potential future sponsors? That there are NO gurantees, WorldTour license or not... Who would be crazy ebough to throw money into a sport as arbitrary as that?
The current lack of new sponsors already reflects this sentiment. This won't help...

The only sane thing would be to keep SAXO in the world tour and let them stay or lose the spot on their own merits. If they manage to get the points they'll still be WorldTour next season. If the team turns out to be too weak they'll go. That is as it should be.

They will cos Alberto will earn anough points for them in the Vuelta that they get a WT license in 2013, since it turns out that he will actually be able to earn points directly after his ban after all.

Well they can argue that they would have earned enough points had they not had to work for Alberto.

Either way I think they will keep the license. UCI dont want to kill of Team Saxo Bank. They want them to be part of the WT peleton in the long run.

while i feel sorry for the saxo in the given context, and i symposize with the unfair claims, saxo has no depth. I very much dislike this one rider team approach, I understand budget contraints are the reason for such an approach, but by the same token does such a weak team deserve WT status? IMO the WT teams should all have depth, and be capable of challenging in most races. Saxo really don't derseve the WT license imo.

Yeah they didnt even invite him when he was an untainted defending champion.

I don't see the Andy Schleck Organization inviting him if he's the guy who won it an olympic cycle a go.

Especially the way the French are hating on Spain and Alberto in particular, these days.

Since AC is returning in August, and Saxo's budget/payroll/roster were all set BEFORE the ban decision, that they should let Saxo keep the license for this year. Then reevaluate Saxo next year when everyone knows what team AC lands at, or to see if Saxo can bolster the roster... OFC presuming they get sponsorship.

So, if Saxo didn't have to pay Contador (and I'll bet you his wage isn't pennies) don't you think they could afford a handful or riders of a high level instead? Saying a team isn't worthy of WT status solely because they focus on one strong rider seems like a weak argument, since Saxo has been licensed for a year now with just Contador.
It's not like such a team composition is unheard of in pro cycling.

The bigger pitfall I foresee is that even if they do get to keep their license, is that the Valverde rule will be retroactively made to apply to Contador (it was enacted after his positive/notification thereof I believe?) And any points he scores late in the season wont count, forcing Saxo to either lose WT license or abandon Contador so they can afford to buy up riders with enough points for the WT license (a shocking model, really...)

the verdict will come probably after il giro anyway

After the vuelta is more likely. We all know how much the UCI like to delay things.

IMO they should never had gotten a WT license to begin with. Pro conti is perfect for teams who can't field a solid team for most WT races, but can do well in the races for which they are invited. Saxo is such a team.

But I suspect that they will let them keep their license this season, and take it away for a lack of points for the next season, unless Saxo buys points. By the time the verdict is rendered and appealed at CAS, it would have been december already anyway.

For the 120th time. If it wasn't for Berto they would have had several other riders with potential to win races to gain the points. They chose Berto and he gained enough points for them to stay in the WT which was as planned. That's why they got the license. They had enough points.

Besides, the team is exactly the same - if not stronger (Kroon) - in this time of the season as last season. And that went pretty well.

Lol they wouldn't have been invited to the most important race.

So who would have earned SaxoBank points?

Hushovd? Fuglsang? JTL?

Who? I asked who is it that would have saved Saxo's WT licence?

I have no idea who they were interested in or who were out of contract in july 2010 but with the release of half a squad + Cancellara being sold for several millions you'd think they would get a few qulaity riders in like they had done for every year in last ten years...

But they didnt sign quality riders, even after they saved money from Cancellara's transfer to Leo-Trek. Even when lots of riders were available after HTC and Geox were closed. They only managed to get Kroon. So much for the reputation and (apparantly) lots of money to spend from the Cancellara deal.
