Skewer failure

What I find funny on that forum is that instead of everyone telling the guy how silly he has been, they all went to check the bike in case they've forgotten to close their QR.

Check Sheldon Brown's comments on exposed cam skewers. http://sheldonbrown.com/skewers.html

Very easy to tighten them down with the radiussed plastic washer askew only for it to rotate while you're riding and viola, the skewer becomes loose. Maybe that's why lawyer tabs were invented.

Not a problem with the older type enclosed cam skewers.

I've seen a rear wheel skewer break on the bike in front during a 70 km/h downhill. Not a pretty sight. :(

1) IMSG Saturday. Wind gusting to 40 mph.
2) Triathletes using deep section front wheels, including Zipp 1080s.
3) Hilarity ensues.

The old 60rpm triathlete death wobble - gotta love it.

Lord what a tiring thread. One guy confesses a mistake and it's time to condemn all triathletes. I mean, go ahead if it makes you feel better. Here's a newsflash though: triathletes are not all newbie boneheads. Go to any moderately large triathlon and I guarantee you will find some very fit, strong and skilled cyclists, many of whom are faster than you are. I'm certain you all feared just that fact, hence the outsized reaction to a minor revelation.

Your skewers are tight, but are you faster than they are? Jeez, go for a ride.

Disclaimer: I am not a triathlete.

Come on dude - this is a cycling forum. What else are we going to do other than hang it on triathletes:).

I would rather poke my eye out with a fork than go to a moderately large triathlon, but I am sure that there are plenty of triathletes who are faster than me in a race where you have to ride at a cadence of 60rpm and wear budgie smugglers.

You may not be a triathlete, but your choice of the user name "soloist" does hint at some individualistic tendencies, so dont be surprised if you start getting an hankering for some really deep rims. Just keep the skewers tight and it will be fine;).

Lighten up! We all know that there are triathletes that are excellent cyclists. There are several in my area who are faster than almost all of the local Cat 1's in a TT and can climb well too.

However there is an increasing amount of newbie triathletes who just view the bike as an oversized, ugly pair of shoes. Check out the Slowtwitch forum for some good examples. Also, we've been bagging triathletes here for a long time before this thread :D

I find it pretty funny that you feel the need to assure us that you are not a triathlete.

Good, got an appropriate amount of umbrage from the crew, which tells me I hit a nerve, and you all feel a little silly. That was the point. I mean, the title of the thread says it all: "Should triathletes be allowed on bikes?" Really? And I should lighten up?

The irony is that you want to stereotype "all" triathletes, and in the process only reinforce the stereotypes about elitist (not to be confused with elite) cyclists. Reading this thread reminds me of the local club ride where the loudmouth Cat 4's spend an hour crowing about the can of chain lube they won at the twilight crit - like they won the Giro or something. Meanwhile the truly good cyclists are quiet at the back of the group just putting in training time.

Again, spend less time making fun of others and just work on your own stuff. You'll be happier in the long run. No charge for that.

Irony is a cruel mistress, especially for those with no sense of humor.

Ligthen up, Francis.

Ways of making people call you a fool, from most frequent to least frequent:

1. Being a fool.
2. Pointing out a deep flaw in their philosophy that strikes to their very core.

Probability would suggest that you're a fool.

It just dawned on me. Are all of you like 16 or 17 years old? I just assumed you were all grown ups, but maybe not - in which case it's a maturity issue. If so, I withdraw my comments and apologize. I can't make you grow up all of a sudden. Take your time and have fun. Sorry for holding up the mirror. Now get back to bashing triathletes if that makes you feel better.

The ol' gears in the head must slow down a bit when you get as old as you are. Let me try to put it in lingo more appropriate for your generation.

You see, man, this Internet thing is far out. It's a gas, man. There are these things called forums. They are filled with hep cats just hangin, man. You know, lip flappin. Can you dig? Sometimes The Man comes around and takes everything way too seriously. It's a real bummer, man.

Null hypothesis is holding.

Stop taking it all soooo seriously :)

Yes, we laugh at triathletes. We also laugh at each other and ourselves too  9 out of 10 posters here don't take things too seriously at all (outside of the clinic of course), if we did we would be at each others throats constantly.

Oh dear....

I like to restore old cars in my spare time. My thing of choice is old renaults, and you should hear the s--t fly between the renault, peugeot and citroen dudes when they get on a bit of a rant. We all love french cars, but we enjoy taking the p--s out of each other in the way that brothers and sisters might.

Now to triathletes. Whether you like it or not, triathlon draws on the traditions of three more established sports. This throws up some things that the people who have a dedication to one of the sports find funny. Don't stress about it.

But most of all dont get all high and mighty - most people who are on here are pretty cool and while they might have opinions that differ from yours, most are willing to debate the issue without it becoming nasty and vindictive.

So bravo for your defence of triathletes, but please understand that what was happening here was just a bit of fun.

Now where do you stand on fixed wheel riding hipsters?:)
