Henao has never shown consistency for a Grand Tour

But he would do well to target one week and on day races

However given the sickness in the SKY camp among the Giro hopefuls this could be his year if he rides the Giro

His poor flat time trailing always hurts him in one week stage races. Pais Vasco is good for him though. Catalunya would be as well but he never tends to ride it. Basically the Pais Vasco - Ardennes period is by far the best period for him during the season.

Re: Sign here if you think Henao is a future star on the eur

He is a great rider but his lousy TT undermines his potential in all 1 week races except Pais Vasco. His GT record is not really bad considering he wasn't the leader of the team:Giro 9th-16th/Vuelta 14th-28th-22th.
I still hope somehow he is left out of Giro and get a chance in TDF.I know his chances are slim but one can only hope.

Just for curiosity, why do you want that? :)

I would prefer him to be at the Giro, where he can have more opportunities, than to be a slave for Froome with no personal freedom. And after the Giro he could target the Vuelta, where this year with the all the Muritos it would be a nice parcous for him.

Seems like he somehow often produces his best performances when he is not the team leader. I think he was the strongest rider yesterday and could have one the stage if he didn't have to work for Thomas (which of course is fair since Thomas will likely win the overall).

I don't know about that, but I have the feeling that 2016 can be his year.

2012 was very good for a first pro year. In 2013 he had a great start but faded in the second half of the year. 2014 was what is known and last year was excellent for someone who came back from that injury.

He was excellent in Pais Vasco but in the Ardennes it seemed that he couldn't have his traditional punch after 200+ kilometres, which is to be expected of someone who barely raced in more than a year. In the second half I think he lacked some pre-season training and was again very tired. With a full winter behind him, let's see what he can do in 2016. If he can maintain this form, and without a tiresome Tour behind him he can do well at the Olympics too.

He will not have more opportunities in Giro anyway. He already did Giro and Vuelta but no Tour.I think after all these years he deserve it.He was saying this in 2014:"I’m living every day with the hope of riding the Tour". It seems to be his dream to ride Le Tour as i saw him talking about it in many instances,he doesn't care he'll be just a slave there.

I don't care what place he deserves in team Sky's line-up but I'm really happy to see him riding so well again. I think the only place he may lead is Basque Country, Ardennes and perhaps San Sebastian/Lombardia.

He will not lead any race in Ardennes. In Amstel and Liege he will ride for Kwiatkowski and in Fleche he will co-lead with Poels. In Basque Country he was scheduled to ride for Landa, but given Landa recent sickness I think he will be the leader. Lombardia is too far away to know.

Ah you're quite right, my bad. I had forgotten about Kwiat. Blame on Sky though for having 20 leaders for every race they enter :D

Don't be so certain. Kwiatkowski form is preety meh so far. Henao is in very good shape, to say Kwiatkowski is definite leader can't be said so far, especially in Liege, of course Amstel suits him the most.

And co-lead with Poels? Fleche is everyone for themselves.

Where do you saw that? Sergio always said, at least since February, that he came to Europe first to Paris - Nice and then to lead in Pais Vasco.

Or just doing an Astana and picking the wrong leader.

I hope he will do the Giro I think he might have more freedom there, Landa is much less of a certainty then Froome with Thomas as a back up. Hope he goes Pais Vasco - Ardennes (confirmed) - Giro - some rest - Poland - OS - Vuelta - Lombardia

Re: Sign here if you think Henao is a future star on the eur

Kwiatkowski will be a leader in Amstel, and for a very good reasons (obviously, previous winner).
I also think he will arrive in great shape. He was good in early races in Spain, then got sick, and now getting his racing legs back in TA, already staying with the best riders.

LBL I think he can co-lead with Henao. I don't see him as a sole leader there.

Why would he co-lead with Poels? Henao has finished top 10 twice, including a 2nd. Poels has never finished top 10. That said, Gloin is right. Not much working for a leader going on at FW, except bringing back the break.

Henao's first year was good,
Second year was inconsistent but he never cracked big.
Third year he was sidelined and then crashed
Last year coming back from injury was impressive IMHO.

So this year could be his breakthrough TBH.

I also hope he goes to the Tour. If it is his dream Sky might need him in the mountains without Porte this year.

Something that I really don't want anymore is for him to go the Vuelta. That race hasn't been his race for a reason that I don't know. He should go to either Giro or Tour or both, but forget about trying out for La Vuelta again.

I agree with someone that said that he races better when he is not the leader and is racing for someone else. Some riders are just like that and I don't understand it. He can just go to the Giro with the idea in mind to ride for Landa and maybe end up doing a great race.

I don't think the real problem is his consistency. The thing is more that Henao has turned out to be one of the best in the world on short steep hills and good on easy mountains, but he is just not that great on long hard mountains and has never really been as pro, despite a promessing first season, but likely also his focus has been more on the shorter climbs since then, so that Pais Vasco, Ardennes-clasics and stages like the Nice stage today in Paris-Nice is perfect for him, while grand tours are not really if riding for GC, though of course he can still be a solid helper.
