Thank you! It was fun. Also yes, I read every post before I comment, which is why my post total is so low, but I like to be somewhat informed before I comment.
That's great to see, as you know many people on this forum don't do that at all, I'm sure we can all think of a few (especially in the clinic) personally I always try to do so. Indeed did you know that some peopel even start whole threads without being "somewhat informed"?

one thing that I haven't seen mentioned here is the angle of your saddle. the old school position always had the tip slightly up, your weight centered on the saddle so if you took your hands off the bars at any time you would still be centered. now days, riders seem to have their saddle tip pointed slightly down or level, even though this may be more aero, it increases the weight bearing on your arms. if you take your hands off the bars your weight is now shifting forward and you are not in balance.
so riding in the tri position with your saddle down and hitting a small bump is now a problem.
if you set up your bike properly and spend half of your waking hours riding it, you will be ok when you hit those small bumps, no matter where your hands are.

OK boys and girls I think that maybe it is time to put this one to bed, just in case you have just entered the arena the original two option poll was as follows:
1. ban the simulated tri-bar position or
2. allow short round tri-bars in road events as was the case a few years ago.
I think that the situation may be like wearing a helmet or not (I always do) if the only person you are going bring down and injure is yourself then I condone it, BUT if you cause me or some other innocent guy or girl to come off then is that really fair. I wonder if a survey was to be done among the pro riders just how many actually use the position or condemn the guys who do. Absolutely no one likes to fall off and the older one gets the harder we hit the ground. It really is just common sense IMHO.

I'm looking for the one that's been drilled out to the nines. If I'm going to do it might as well go the whole way :D

Edit: Crud! They only make them in 26.0! Errr... maybe someone will make them in carbon fiber (the ultimate revenge)

and then, drill out the carbon fibre!

Incidentally, it appears there is now an extra poll option
Well thanks for that new poll whoever created it, and had I got more experience it would have been like that from the start. Now we can literally see your true colours.

Made my day!!

Excellent! I knew there were a few more of us around.

Also oak legs, sorry to hear about your buddy.

In the vein of actually contributing to this thread, I upgraded to a ergo/aero road handlebar a few years ago, and love riding in the simulated tri-position with those. My wrists were never comfortable on a round bar.

Is it true that you can play a tune on those.

Once you are over about 60kph on a descent you can muck around blocking various holes and trying to get tones out of them. Of course in the spirit of the thread, its not a great idea to do this when you are first in the train...

I bet you don't wear a helmet either you no good dangerous young whippersnapper. I'm 104 and when I ride a bike, I feel extremely unsafe, so I think we should just ban everything.

EDIT: Just noticed the extra option on the poll, cracks me up how many people voted to keep things as they are.

Hesjedal rode it a lot, when in that break-away

Cancellara "started" it all. And everybody equates Cancellara with fast and with that particular position.
But only Cancellara can combine raw power with elegance when he leans on his forearms on the handlebar.

Therefore the position should only be allowed for riders with multiple TT world championships. Those who are not a cycling god would have to go deep in the drops like everybody else, for aesthetic reasons.

It just will not go away so once again I can only repeat: I wonder if a survey was to be done among the pro riders just how many actually use the position or condemn the guys who do. Heck, I had a bike who's steer tube cap would whistle under the right conditions, freaked me out the first time. Afterwards, there would always be a dare/guess/request from the fellow riders to make it whistle.

Does one really fall harder when aging or does it just hurt more? Hmm. Maybe that is for another thread.
