At this point in the match, 16-12 Selby, I'm gaining a new respect for Selby. It seems to me that with such a commanding lead, and fully confident in himself, Selby has a few times shot with less care than normal, and even set up a few opportunities for Ding, just out of compassion or a feeling of respect, and with no fear of losing the contest. Possible?

It also seems that now he's realized he likely won't win, the pressure is off Ding's shoulders and he is shooting much better and enjoying himself.

As long as Selby keeps Ding 3 frames behind, he'll be relaxed and taking shots with less concern. But I doubt he will (is) be leaving some chances on purpose. It simply isn't the level of Crucible final. By any means.

I love this sport. Snooker may be the only, most truly working class sport there is left on the world stage. What cycling used to be, and wishes it still was.

Hats off to Selby, fully deserving of his win. And now that he's had the experience, and come runner up, I expect we'll see the fine Ding in the winner's spot before too long.

As a deliberately contrarian kind of guy, my affection for Selby increases with every bit of opprobrium he receives. Burying that old bloke really has worked wonders for Leicester, hasn't it?

What is he getting opprobrium for? And for those of us who aren't local, who is the old guy?

Yeah, they were bottom of the league last season with 9 games left then he was re-buried in Leicester Cathedral, they won 7 out of the last 9 games stayed up and then this season, I mean there's nothing in it of course but a nice co-incidence, well not for me as I'm a Spurs fan.

On snooker I'm happy for Selby, as someone who used to live in Leicester and played the same snooker halls he grew up playing in, (albeit a year or two later) that's a bit of Leicester success I can feel happy about!

Since I made that post, I've had a conversation with someone who said 'he brings darkness every time he visits the table'. That's the kind of attitude In referring to - that he's a soulless robot, and unsporting with it.

Yeah, I was thinking of the villain with a smiling cheek himself, Richard III.

Leicester win rate, 2014-15 before R3's rebuttal: 37%
Win rate after reburial: 63%.

Some things I've learned about match play at the Crucible:

  • 1. If your opponent is new to the level you're meeting him at, he will be disoriented at the beginning of the match and trying to get his bearings. (We saw this with both McManus and Ding.) While this is happening, claim as many frames as you can. By the time your opponent comes to his senses he will be too far behind, and too discouraged, to catch up

    2. (This probably applies to all match play.) If your opponent is going to win the frame and you have the opportunity, snooker him for as long as possible. In this way, he may get the win, but it will tire him and frustrate him, knock him off his rhythm, and probably cost him several frames to come. And thus, potentially, you turn a lost frame into a won match.

It did seem as though the crowd in the auditorium was more enthused by and supportive of Ding than Selby.

Leicester get two victories in one evening. Incredible story.

Was just going to post along that line. Selby must be in triple hog heaven tonight. :D

He sure seems happy about it!

The quarters aren't over yet, but the single table phase in the Crucible has just begun.
Hawkins and Maguire still have to solve out who'll meet Higgins in the semis, and thanking to Selby, who went through the quarters with a session to spare, they're the only pair in Crucible parterre from the moment Ding eliminated O'Sullivan.

Anybody following?

Yes, after the match with Fu I thought there was no way the third session with Ding will end 12 each. But, Ding learnt a lot from the last year's final it appears, and Selby looked nervous during this evening's session.
From the other side looks like Higgins' closer to the final.
