So why can the glamour girls not be replaced by guys?”

I want to know why we cannot have commentators in the U.S. like the ones in Australia.

From a news story about "outrageous" commentary:

Everybody takes everything so seriously, and they get angry when people say what everyone is thinking.
those Australians are crazy. See Paul Hogan's knife.

What sickens me about this is that they assume the podium girls are "hetrosexual" talk about typecasting, how "hetrophobic" is that? Is he saying if a podium girl is pretty she can't be gay? Shame on you sir for "assuming"!

The UCI has not released its findings on wheather or not being gay is considered "performance enhancing". Mr. Vrijman, formerly the Directer of the anti-doping agency in the Netherlands only commented, " Uh, leave me alone! I am not gay thats just my accent!".

The first thing which came to my mind: why didn't the Phonak rider shave his legs?

And I did watch men's figure skating ... together with my wife.

Well, let's see, those three and Evans............at least four times, that I know of.:D
Edit: Oh and those two guys in that picture, maybe they are married too?

yet to be proven...:D. I'll stop taking the bait!

Let's stop speculating as to who might be gay. First of all, the people under discussion may not appreciate it, and secondly, it's none of our business.

The whole thing is moot, anyway. Zomegnen has said that the Dutch won't provide any podium guys/gals, the Giro will bring its own Italian Podium girls.

This is NOT speculation on who might be gay. Men who like to wear dresses are not automatically gay, look at Scotland.... That said, I have heard Paul You Know Who "insinuate" that Phil You Know Who enjoys an evening gown.

there's too much homophobic invective in our society, it results in drunken red-neck yahoos and thugs to feel there is an implied consent to beating people who they just accuse of being gay- at times with fatal consequences. cyclists have enough peril to deal with everytime we go for a ride- I don't think exposing riders to that homophobic element is a wise idea. there should be no outing or speculation of pros; nor should they be subject to what may result in a humiliating misidentification or ceremony.

Damn Amsterdam. A drag queen on the podium of Zomegnan’s beloved Giro? He’d rather cancel the entire three week race. Local TV stations and AT5 RTV Noord-Holland had organized their own competition to select podium presenters, but Zomegnan was having none of that.

“I don’t know anything about the competition, it’s not been authorized by us. However the girls will be Italian and we’ll bring them from Italy. This whole thing is not a problem.”

The Giro "Miss" Yolantha.

That message was loud and clear: do not mess with my sexy girls. I will truck my hot latin babes into the Netherlands and that is that.

It may be that Angelo does not fully grasp the creative and sexy possibilities of the podium drag queen. Didn’t he ever watch those wacky Fellini films, hasn’t he ever been to Carnival in Florence, doesn’t he get the over-the-top excess of Italian opera? We say Angelo, check out the Drag Queen Olympics website and reconsider the inherent naught spice.

This whole thing has gotten out of hand and crazy Z will probably bring back his mega-babe to restore order: Dutch actress Yolanthe Cabau van Kasbergen. The lovely Yolanthe oozes sexuality and is the official Giro “miss” of this year’s tour.

Twisted Spoke suspects that Zomegnan is just a little unhinged by all this crazy podium man talk. He has nightmares, he wakes up in a cold sweat thinking about men with hairy chests and campy, outlandish costumes kissing stage winners. As Colonel Kurtz said in Apocalypse Now, “the horror, the horror.”

Crazy Z will not let that happen, not on his Giro watch. He’s going to make triple sure no drag queens or transvestites slip into his camp.

Angelo will now perform a full physical inspection of all his potential podium babes before heading to the Netherlands. He’s going to establish beyond a shadow of a doubt that they’re Italian, they’re female and they’re sexy. Tests to begin immediately at Zomegnan’s country vacation home.

I think it is hilareous. Cyclists running around in lycra saying well if levi had chased valverde in the dauphine l. up the hill or if cadel had chase valverde up the hill... I respect cadel now but then I thought he was being a Queen. The mayor is having quite a joke on the cyclists if the upcoming GIRO. I am not intimidated by homosexual or psuedo homo bannterings, no threat here. The machisimo Giro director should do as Dr. Dre and Ice Cube say" You'd better check yourself before you wreck yourself" Podium girls are eye candy but disrespectful of women. Why not throw a little man action in front of the machos.

I'm thinking that is WonderLance and BPC.

I'm not a fan of the podium girls, it seems like a very sexist - and heterosexist - idea. Having podium boys would have been a nice way to try to refute that. It's a good proposal by the GroenLinks which it's a shame to see rejected.

Although I agree with Susan's point that the sexuality of any particular rider is no-one else's business, to say that it's also wrong to discuss it because they may not appreciate it seems a misplaced concern. Why should someone care if people think they were homosexual? It's like worrying about people speculating on your music tastes. If someone started spreading rumours that I like Coldplay, I wouldn't... no, actually, I see your point.
