Stage 16: Pinzolo – Aprica 177 kms:Where legends are made

IMO the giro is already won. Contador is not going to lose minutes. I see him not losing more than a few seconds, if anything at all.
Astana should be thinking towards the tour, and making it as difficult as possible for Contador over the next week. Landa and Aru need to attack to soften him up for July.

Landa needs to attack on Mortirolo after Astana ride the stage fast.

That should have been the plan yesterday (Landa attacking on the penultimate climb). Can't see this working on this stage as Contador is probably planning an attack on the Mortirolo anyway and will be happy to have the company (Landa).

It will be very interesting to see who manages to get into the break. Most riders between the 10th and 25th places must be eager to try and win a stage and improve their GC in the process, could be fun. The top10 could be completely shaken tomorrow and in the days after.

For once this Giro I'am saying the break wont take it... So they prolly will :)

No, I think Astana will come guns blazing and Tinkoff will try keep things tight until last climb (if they survive that long)

I don't really understand why they aren't using the same route as in 2012. It is an even harder ascent and the flat between Aprica and the start of the mortirolo would become smaller.

Queen stage which means Alberto to win solo as befits a consummate champion.
nahhhh! Alberto plans to keep things simple: let the other get tired trying to drop him and meanwhile saving himself for sprinting in the flats stages trying to improve his handling skills.. What else to do in a training race?

I liked that Mortirolo ascent - very steep and brutal. The way they rode this Mortirolo climb in 2012 was a big disappointment though (we can't blame the climb for that of course). I guess the fact that they can't have team cars on this ascent causes some overwhelming logistic problems (although they managed it in 2012). Great climb but probably not ideal for a GT race because of its narrow roads.

This is where Basso's experience will pay. Contador to attack and solo over the Mortirolo, only to be joined by Aru for the descent. Contador to offer Aru the stage in return for being paced down the mountain. Then Contador drops Aru in a seated attack on the gentle slope to Aprica.
Didn't know they had Giro coverage down at the opium den.

Also quite sure the team cars go over the Mortirolo. Motorbikes are only used for Zoncolan and Kronplatz iirc.

Astana to do most of the work with the Tinkoff brigade disappearing after the first 20 kilometers except for Contador, who will ride the Astana train until Landa attacks at the base of the Mortirolo. Alberto to follow and to inflict so much physical and psychological pain on Mikel that the later falls into a deep depression. Landa is later found in a mental institution somewhere in western Mongolia showing severe signs of regression, laying in the fetal position asking for his mother's tit.

Seems quite unlikely.

In all seriousness, Alberto to obviously put in a brutal attack.

Whatever else happens is inconsequential.

Whether you're a fan of his or not, just sit back and enjoy the show he's going to put on.

Well that I do agree with :D

And Vino will come to see him on horses all the way north through the desert to resurrect him and turn him into the ultimate super soldier that will make Brailsford's or anyone's experiments look a century-old.

In all seriousness, he will be fine and himself tomorrow, the last man to stay with Alberto.

There's a lot of expectation about Motirolo, but lets not forget that Zoncolon last year was fairly uneventful. Astana have to isolate AC earlier, not just near the end, and then attack him in turn, not just work for him. No doubt Vino is 'giving instructions' today, lol.
Kruiswuik, Betancur, Trofimov possibles for the stage if given enough time. Amador to hang in there.

Zoncolon was the final stage, and Quintana had already won a couple of stages and just had to watch Uran and Aru. This is following a rest day and the first day of a brutal week. Landa looks very strong. Contador wants a win and some good news for Bertie is that Rogers won that Zoncolon stage. Kreuziger, Rogers, and Basso  to go in the break.

The battle to get in the break on the first (and second) climb will likely be very interesting. On Mortirolo not much is gonna happen. Landa might attack but Contador will follow and then that's it. Secondly, despite that there will probably be some good riders in the (big) break, nobody is close enough in gc nor strong enough to force Contador to move on Mortirolo either.
