I think we'll see Astana setting a tempo up Mortirolo that will drop all but the best climbers. A lot of them will probably rejoin on the Aprica climb. From here on it's likely that we'll see attacks from the likes of Hesjedal and Kruijswijk. I have no idea who's gonna win today though, but I think it's likely that Astana will try to set up a situation like Sunday in which they are Landa and Aru vs Contador within the last 2-3 kilometres and then try and set up a stage win.

Tonight I dreamt of AC bonking on the Mortirolo, dropped by a 15ish men group. But Astana didn't notice so they just let Cunego set the tempo  :p

Lol, was more referring to it as a circuit often seen at the end of flat stages or criteriums, which are only there to break claviculae. And to talk more trying to make a worthy stage thread for the queen stage, seeing as the greatest stage hypers on this forum seem to have retired from that function
And you doing great

Today is easily the toughest day and we know Contador is really strong when the going gets tough so barring any lingering injuries i see no reason why Contador wont win this stage

Also quite sure the team cars go over the Mortirolo. Motorbikes are only used for Zoncolan and Kronplatz iirc.
My mistake then. I just checked the video and there certainly were team cars. It's weird because the 2012 ascent was such a narrow road - almost a bike track in places. And I seem to recall a discussion about team cars being sent up another way. Maybe the teams only had one car going up this way while their 2nd car was following another route. Maybe I'm wrong altogether (probably more likely ;) )

Good to see Kruijswijk going so well. That one costly lapse on stage 4...
Wasn't it 2011 in his rookie Giro when he was the only one that had the audacity to follow Contador? I wonder if he has the physical maturity to make it stick by now...

..What's left of the peloton will then enter a long downhill to enter the racing circuit on Edolo. Luckily for us, and unluckily for the riders, this is not your average circuit.
As a both cycling - and motor racing fan for the past 35 years, I thought you referenced to a motor racing circuit, so I got curious. In fact Google Maps/Earth reveals some closed asphalt track which looks pretty much like a "mini Enna Pergusa" in Edolo :)

I guess you spotted this water reservoir

That's not Enna-Pergusa, that's the Sopraelevata from Monza. ;)

Yes, it has the banking from Monza. But I can also very well sympathise with the Enna-Pergusa reference, since that racetrack also circles a body of water, a vulcanic lake to be precize.

As many have said, Astana should definitely try to drop Tinkoff doms and then try to 1-2 AC on the Mortirolo. However, there might be an additional snag in that tactic if AC is insanely strong, which makes it more risky. Namely a scenario that Landa goes and AC does not chase immediately, but waits for a 15-20sec gap to open and then drops Aru while going after him. Assuming that Aru cannot bridge given the pace they are going, will Landa then be forced to wait, or do they change leaders on the fly?

Other than that, gonna be hilarious to witness the movement(s) for incredible cycling in action all day long :D

Zakarin and Betancur should be ready,a stage win here should not be missed.I think Astana will try hard but i don't see Aru dropping Contador in this Giro.Landa might be able to do it,but he's so far back that Contador could let him go and chase him only if he manages a worrying gap.

Stage 16 and we have had 14 different stage winners in 14 stages, not including the TTT. When was the last time that happened?

Robobasso to win obviously. Not sure he can take the maglia rosa cause he's not very good on the descent of the mortirolo and 1hour 30 is a lot but he'll be close i'm sure.

Shame he is useless now....oh wait he was pacing Roman while Alberto was left alone with 6 Astanas at 30km to go.
Pacing for how long? Minute? He was useless until now, but it could change.

If Basso has rested well, he can be useful until Aprica. The first Aprica ofc :p

I'll bet on a Bertie vs Landa in the Basso vs Simoni style of 2006, clearly the two strongest riders at this point in the race.

I noticed many people backing up the tactics of Landa attacking Contador at Mortirolo. That might be the hardest mistake Astana can do today. If they both drop Aru (very possible) Contador follows Landa's wheel until 3 to go and distances him easily. The best place for Landa to attack Contador is the flat part before Mazzo (if Contador is isolated) or anywhere after the top of Mortirolo (where Contador will most probably be alone).

I've mentioned the possibility of Contador alone and 3-4 Astanas in Edolo or Pragellato many days ago. Well it happened in Pinzolo first but Pinzolo wasn't that suitable for an Astana attack. In Finestre and Aprica climbs drafting is more important as the slopes are lower so I'm expecting Astanas to be more daring.

Anyways. It will be like the hyenas vs the lion IMHO. The Lion is the king of the field but the hyenas sometimes give him hard time and grab the trophy off him :p

I just remember one of the team cars running up the arse of another.

If Landa starts attacking on the flat, then I've seen it all.
