The problem is not the TV, its the choppers that relay the feed. Rather dangerous to say the least for a chopper to fly into cloud when those clouds have big rocks (mountains) inside.

Low Cloud/Rain/Sleet/Snow = No choppers can fly and they have to rely on fixed cameras.

The solution of course would be to have a repeater tower every km - bit expensive though.

That would have been true 20 years ago. But lets postpone this discussion a little bit.
