Yeah..He made a couple of attacks. Exactly what Rodriguez did too. And who didn't think Rodriguez wouldn't crack in the long ascents?

You can say that Rodriguez deserved to lose, because he should have tried more than late attacks. But you can't say that Ryder is a more deserving winner because of this.

Of course i can, b/c no one expected him to win. It´s not his fault that the other guys went on strike one day, and basically gave the giro to him on the other stages.

Hesjedal was the complete underdog though, you should expect less from him than the so-called stars, who made a mockery of this race. Hesjedal could rely on his somewhat better time-trial, and actually did take responsibility in the end. He deserves it a lot more than Rodriguez, Basso and Scarponi.

+1

Well said Lanark. Ryder showed them on friday, and did what he had to do yesterday (and of course today).

He trains in Maui during the winter, yes.
He does not live there, was not born there, definitely did not grow up there.
Besides that, ever been to Maui?
Ryder would be considered "hyper" amongst Mauians! :p

+1

That's what I was trying to say. But you said it better. :)

The Canadian National anthem has never sounded better, congrats to Ryder, this is best possible outcome I could have ever imagined from this Giro being a Canadian, I am pumped!

Ditto. I hope this translates into more interest, and better coverage of the sport in Canada.

Well..I'm happy for Ryder. Great for him. But he ridden pretty much the same race as Rodriguez. So how is he more deserving again? Because people didn't think he could do it? That would be the exact same situation as if Rodriguez beat Hesjedal today -- Noone thought he could do it. What then?

I thought all three GTs last year were excellent. Way better than this Giro anyway.

huh? i will simply never get this attitude. looking back reverentially at races that were rendered utterly meaningless by clinic-related issues (giro 2011). how much fun is that!?

Have to say great win. Rode very smart the entire race.

Which begs the question.....

Peiper as DS appears a much better strategist than JV.....

why shouldn't the Canadians be thrilled?? awesome result.

from what the portuguese ES commentators were saying today, hesjedal has been getting little no exposure at all on the canadian media . . . maybe the win can change that?

I doubt it.
Isn't the government doing all it can to shut down Canada's only national broadcaster, the CBC?

In comparison, it took the US a couple of years after Ar*****ng's first Tour win to get to full-blown coverage mode.

Well, thank god Contador wasn't riding this year. He would have blown them all to bits by minutes in the first week.

Yes, epic borefest this was. Alberto would have finished 20 minutes ahead of everyone else.

But I'll let it rest here, before I get accused of thread hijacking again.

Well done by Scarponi. Yesterday he was so concentrated on letting Hesjedal tire himself that he forgot to chase down DeGendt. Way to **** up your podium spot.

Hesjedal is a derserved winner and that monster ride yesterday alone makes DeGendt deserve his podium spot aswell.
