Gee's sudden improvements on all kinds of terrain seem strange, to say the least. Padun who became (understandably) the subject of suspicion and jokes had a superior pedigree (as a prospect) compared to the Canadian.

I think I read Gee actually did his first ever altitude camp before this race. That could of course be to obscure doping, but it‘s also crazy.

Gee did burst onto the scene last year at the Giro - 4 2nd places, 2 nd in the KOM and 2nd in the points competition, but in his own words, “They started playing games and usually I’m already gone by that point. There were guys dropped and I was like ‘I don't want them to catch me’, so I just started riding,"

If we get Padun like performances over the next two days, then I think we could ask, what was going on at that altitiude camp?

TBF last year was his first year on the WT, no? I mean, I don't know for certain with any pros, and I would not stake a claim on him being clean, but he has not overly surprised me other than I thought his TT would be a tiny bit better, and his climbing a tiny bit worse. I find one week races a bit harder to gauge than, say, a GC (except when you nuke everyone, like our friendly neighborhood aliens). And given his teams prior to 2023, I would really not be surprised that this was his first altitude camp.

"The whole process is ridiculous. WADA now has 10 days in order to file their case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. And in this 10-day period, UKAD and I, who are now on the same team effectively, we have to jointly nominate an arbitrator from a list of 421 arbitrators. But how are we supposed to nominate an arbitrator if we don’t know what the basis of WADA's appeal is?"

Cyclist in his mid twenties suddenly discovers new found ability and climbing prowess. We've seen this movie before! Last years Giro was a major red flag and yesterday was another, particularly for a rouleur like Gee.

how about Javier Romo too? i've noticed him ride well in breakaways in the past but his climbing in this race has been straight out of left field. it's not like he's that young either. Movistar got on the good stuff.

He then had a very good winter and recently completed an altitude training camp. And it's all coming to fruition now," ...."I was personally very surprised. His stage victory in the Dauphiné was already very nice, but following the best climbers in the world is an impressive achievement. The nice thing is that we don't know where he might end up. Derek was in our training team and was never the greatest talent. No one expected what he is showing now.

This new era of retro cycling is really going full 90ies. Now, if we also get rid of team radios and power meters we're fully back in the mid 90ies.
