Only 30 seconds ? Sure it wasn't 30 minutes.... ?
He didn't crash, but punctured. So, he first lost a few seconds slowing down with the flat tyre. Unlike in a crash, his mec was prepared for the bike change. That costed 10 seconds, pushing included. Reaching topspeed, another 2 to 3 seconds extra timeloss. So, all together, 17 to 18 seconds. Enough to win silver, not enough to win gold. The last part of the race, after a timecheck of his team, Evenepoel knew he had 20 seconds on Ganna and Van Aert. More on Tarling. So, he slowed down, especially in the corners to avoid any risk. Evenepoel confirmed it after the race. No way Tarling could have come close to Evenepoel.
I guess we will never know.

More like 30-35 sec.

They showed his GPS times relative to Vacek just after the replay, which were -15 sec at 6 km, and at 7.7 km had counted up to + 13 sec, still increasing, when they cut to show Sheffield post crash.
That's 28 sec, plus another couple before he got up to full speed, plus another 3 he'd have gained on Vacek between 6 km and where the puncture happened.

I think he's entitled to blame the puncture for not winning.
Have you ever seen a bike change after a puncture, especially in a TT ? Even during this race, with the replay, we saw almost the entire slowing down and bikechange of Tarling. Including the coming back to topspeed, all together 17 to 18 seconds.

The world champ gets to wear rainbows for a year, and stripes on the sleeves forever.
The Olympic champ gets a golden bike or helmet for some years which nobody notices.
Now what has more visibility, tradition and therefore prestige?
For RR that is, TT is different
Maybe it's different for different nations, Cav is always going to feel he missed out in 2012, yet he's a world champion, it's the one thing not on his palmares an Olympic gold medal.

Wiggo almost got more plaudits in the UK for the TT win in 2012 than the TdF, and since though arguably that's because Froome & G have also won the TdF.

I'd also say I think Nicole Cookes 2008 olympic road win has more resonance than her world championship that year. Albeit the circumstances that it seemed to kick-start a gold medal rush helped.

Boardman always gets recognised as an Olympic champion first, a world champion second.

Whether those riders have the same view in all cases, not sure but certainly I think Brits view the Olympics for cycling as more important than World Championships, even though most of the recent history Brits have done better at World Championships than the Olympics.

Maybe less the case now as we win quite a few more medals thesedays, but Olympic medalists used to be lionised in the UK, most of the Beebs commentary team are only there because they won an Olympic medal, not because they're either good or natural commentators/broadcasters

If you quizzed all the active commenters on this forum to answer in 5 seconds or less who won The OG RR in 2016 vs. who finished 2nd at Lombardia that year, you’d see the difference in status.
I tried to guess it and named Uran, but then I checked and saw he came 3rd. If I had more than 5 seconds, I hope I'd been able to correctly guess the podium. I struggled more with 3rd in the OGRR.

I think the olympic rings are a protected trademark. You can´t use them unless you got the specific approval of the ioc. That´s why there´s no olympic jersey for cyclists.
Yeah, Vino also had to change jersey to his regular outfit before he could start the 2012 San Sebastian.
