Teams & Riders Tadej Pogačar discussion thread

One thing is to finish fourth because Pogacar doesn't need him, and another thing to go in with the preconceived idea of finishing third. No one but Pogacar should go in with any other idea than helping out. Then, if they don't need him and he can get away with it like last year by going at his own pace, great for him. But the other thing is going in with a personal goal, and that's never good. Ayuso had his idea of a podium finish, and when they needed him, it was a disaster. Almeida was lucky that he never had to sacrifice himself, but ut he can't go to the Tour with the idea of finishing third and saying so. It's a conflict of interest with the potential role of a domestique if they need him.

Ayuso was very criticized last year for saying he had personal goals at the Tour, it's the same situation.
Ayuso was criticized because he was hiding behind the group of favorites without going to the front to help Pogacar. João was the first to work in Galibier without any hesitation and was the one who did more work.

Ayuso never wormed for a teammate while Almeida has and worked for Pogacar and others last year. The only issue is if Almeida has to completely empty himself in support of Pogacar. Especially when Almeida said helping Pogacar win is the main goal and any personal goals are secondary. Ayuso never said that.

UAE released a series of videos, Road to Number 1, is the long propaganda version, production excellent as expected.
Couple of minor points, the script for the video features riders, highlights, coaches comments, regular stuff.. Some feel good stuff, little clips of team photo shoot.. And sort of showcases TDF team, but others who are not picked for Tour appear in the video.. Ayuso is not invited to any parties!!Looks like he might be up for adoption by the " family " as described in the videos!! If you are left out of family photo shoot or Christmas card photo that's a bad sign

It was very striking last year when UEA won the team competition that no one mentioned Ayuso or paid him any credit for being part of the team during the podium ceremony or afterwards. Not even mentioned. Even someone as often egregious as Lance Armstrong paid tribute to Tricky Beltran in 2025, who crashed out (going up hill!) and had him come to the team celebrations! But Ayuso was airbrushed out.

So what did you want him to do? He worked when he was needed. He didn't empty himself, because he didn't need to. Pogacar always attacked before it came to that. Was he supposed to stop pedalling?

So let's be consistent and not complain when Ayuso says she's going to the Tour for the podium and a stage. Almeida said the same thing this year, and opinions differ.I think we have to be consistent. If it's wrong for one, it's wrong for another. Or if it's right for another, then it's right for Ayuso too.
I've also seen many people complaining about Christen in Switzerland, praising Almeida for pursuing his goal in the Tour. You can't be so incoherent.

Nobody would complain about Ayuso if he didn't hide like he did last year when Almeida was actually the one who called him out. I have never seen something like that.

Almeida will be in the 2023 Yates role. He’ll willingly go to the front to set a hard pace on the climbs. If he gets a podium place, then good for him. If not, then it’s fine because their main goal is to have Pogi in yellow in Paris. End of discussion.

Almeida never said that this year. What are you talking about?!

Show me where did he say that. And let's the road talk, you czn complain when Almeida starts riding for himself on the road. In 2 weeks, we will find out.

Who cares about the bike? With such power Teddy can win on square wheels.

A successful rider once said it wasn't about the bike, but he also said a peloton of other stuff that didn't age too well, so I don't know what to think. I assume Pogačar is much better on a unicycle than most of his rivals though, so the gaps would probably be a lot bigger if they raced on those.

UAE do so many commercials and promote a lot of material but can they actually create a fast bike? Specially a TT bike?
Boonen was right all along.
I feel like they made a good improvement this year in their road bike setup . They have two new frames (this is the biggest improvement because all independent articles found the v4rs to be one of the worst bikes in the peloton) new wheels, new tyres... Their TT bike (the frame at least) has not received any significant upgrade in more than 3 years and that may be why it's now quite slow

You have a bit of homework to do on Ayuso being a bad teammate and disliked by most of his teammates. Also for a team with UAE's ambitions, team competition isn't even thought of.

This is true. We are used to seeing roleurs pulling the pin and zigzagging behind after a really difficult time in front with the slopes. Top climbers usually have enough in the tank and can prove quite useful somewhere closer behind after a selection or pogi takes off.

Ayuso never did any of that. He was always at the back of the reduced peloton and selections and then somehow right there with the top 4 at finishes. Rode like a second tier protected rider.
