After seizing yellow atop in the Serra de Monchique on Thursday, Pogacar explained that he had been elevated to a leadership role at the Volta ao Algarve almost by chance after Fabio Aru lost time when he was held up by the mass crash on stage 1. Indeed, Pogacar's very presence in Portugal this week owes much to circumstance. The race was not initially on his programme, but when a berth unexpectedly opened up, his early-season condition earned him his ticket.
"He came to Algarve basically because one of the other riders wasn't ready," Peiper said. "He was in Australia for the Tour Down Under and we'd given him a break afterwards because the turnaround to the time change and the cold weather can take its toll on some riders when they get back.
"We weren't planning to introduce him again until the start of March, but he looked good in training and the performance team said he had recovered from Australia, so we decided to put him in here."

Wow. Pretty funny that his own team seem as surprised and impressed as everyone else that he is this good already.

Yeah, but hopefully they continue to manage him well. I think they should not send him to a GT this year. Let him target a few of these one-week races instead during the season. Since he is good enough to compete already.

I don't think it's necessarily a bad idea to send him to the Vuelta as a stage hunter this year. They could send him home early depending on how he handles it.

He was supposed to ride the Volta Catalunya with Dan Martin and Aru, he was still on the startlist few days ago but now apparently he's not. The only upcoming races are showing as La Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège in a month and later Tour of California. Wonder why they decided to pull him out, those three would have made a strong climbing team.

Unfortunately we really can’t assume that Aru will form part of a strong climbing team these days. Pogacar would be quite likely to be considerably stronger.

Pro-tip. Wait until the teams have posted official start lists, and even then there might be changes.
If a rider is on the start line of a race he's - usually - doing said race.

Yes i'm aware. And for Dumoulin, Froome, Valverde, i couldn't care less. But for these young guys, it's just nice to know which races to look out for.

Check the preliminary start lists to get an idea, but only be certain once the official lists have been published.

Wow what a great ride today, he followed Adam Yates on the final climb and almost beat Schachmann to the line, it was down to the wire. Great performance after losing time in the crash yesterday.

He also lost a minute yesterday, with the crash. He's not the only one (Mas lost even more time, Madouas, Lambrecht, Teuns, Gaudu... all lost 25s, Yates lost time the day before). Basically the only one that hasn't lost time has been Schachmann. But he could have been well inside the top 10 in GC.
