What do you think rest and recovery is for racers like TP?
Some easy riding and some family time, but probably not more than a week before the training ramps up again.

There are plenty of examples of riders coming back quickly from arm/hand fractures. If surgery is successful, he should be on the home trainer in less than a week or so. It depends on the exact nature of the fracture, and how it will impact his training regime, but I wouldn't be surprised if he's close to top level in July. If that's enough to win is another question, but I would at least give it a shot.

He'll be sporting some sort of brace just to protect from impact. Screwing the pieces together is the easy part; the amount of nerves around the thumb can be the issue for a rough patch of pavement. Anyone see crash footage?

Scaphoid and lunate bones are these

He will most likely get some titanium in him. How much does a screw like that weigh? Wasted watts!

He may no longer enjoy cold weather so much…

Wishing him to heal quickly in time to provide us with a splendid summer!

That explains the crash. Pothole taking out the rider in front gives you no room to respond; particularly at 60km/hr. Sh*t.

Not only that, but he said tire exploded. That's why I mentioned tubeless, because with a tubular flat you still have control of your tire, whereas with a tubeless you will just crash after rapid air loss.

In any way, tubeless tires are dangerous and it's been proven a lot this year, with most teams now switching to them. Even a tubeless tires liner would help, but that again adds a few watts. The only way to protect the safety of riders is for UCI to step in and either say you need to use tubulars, or tubeless with liners.

It's a setback for sure. And likely it will affect his Tour preparation. But lets hope the impact of the injury will not prevent him to be at his best.

It was a great classics season. To be honest and after Flanders i was thinking maybe it should be enough for this season. But Pogi likely loves classics the most hence he will for sure try next year again. In regards to PR. They might end up being more cautious about that. But even PR is something i see Pogi trying in the future.

Hard luck- and disappointing not to see the much anticipated duel. Hopefully surgery goes smoothly and he can get back on a trainer in the week. Whereas far from ideal preparation at least it’s not a leg injury.
He seems extremely tough- so i have no doubt he will use this setback as motivation going forward.

I would like to say one thing. UAE and even us (fans, me included) need to understand that Pogacar is human afterall. We all think he is untouchable, a little bit like superman and he has an aura so bright that we really think nothing wrong can happen to him because he really seems a monster and a guy hard to crack. Hope UAE starts to be more cautious in his schedule. Vingegaard is racing in more relaxed races when Pogacar is racing in classics where crashes are way more frequent. I enjoy seeing him in the classics but after his crash today, my fear of not seeing him in the Tour at 100% is bigger.

Without seeing the crash it can be difficult to say what could have happened....you hit a sharp-edged pothole and the front wheel is usually no longer round. The tire becomes secondary no matter what type. If it were a normal road divot that would cause a pinch-flat and the tire left the rim then that's another matter.

As for the UCI mandating tire stuff; I'd say the riders have the power to insist they aren't riding what puts them at risk. Take the sponsor money and put their brand on tubulars as it has usually been done. The UCI and teams in general need all of the revenue they can get to compete.

And you were talking about Remco fans being out of their minds. Just look at what you wrote (to the bolded) and it seems like some messianic cult. The guy broke his wrist for chrissake.

This really sucks in the perspective of today's race which could have been the most epic of battles. In respect to the Tour, I expect it to have little influence. I had the same injury myself 18 months ago, and yes, healing time was 5 weeks, but it's not like you can't pedal. It probably won't be enjoyable for him, but he can still train - I don't expect he will have the same reservations in relation to the cast becoming smelly as I did.

Was that from when you fell in Verona?

It's normal for seeing such aura around your favorite. For example even if one isn't the biggest Remco fan. Today there was a bright white aura all over Remco. Some have even seen a rainbow. Likely due to the combination of bright white aura and rain.

Maybe by preventing him racing it might help avoid him being cooked by July as some were suggesting? I guess he can still train pretty hard on the stationery bike. For example, remember Jay Vine who was unknown except as a Zwift racer. Then he won those two Vuelta MTFs last year.

But I am not sure how much Pog's injury can prevent him training at the needed intensity on an indoor trainer? In 2018 I had surgery for fragmented discs in my L4/L5. I could not ride on the road for maybe 9 months. But I was able to use the smart trainer and was doing better watts back then than I do now 5 years later (age? :(). But I am not a pro or Tadej Pogačar ;)

I am interested to know what the professional opinions on him are. We were robbed of seeing at LBL but we might also be robbed at the TdF which would be a great shame.

I should not hijack the Pog thread but isn’t it so that none of today’s best riders have been able to avoid major injuries - some to such an extent that it have been career altering?

Alaphilippe, Van Aert, Pidcock, Van der Poel, Van Baarle, Groenewegen, Van Avermat, Sagan and many more. And now also Pogacar. The intensity and the competition in the peloton is immense and sooner or later even the most skilled is down and out. Someone wrote it would be great to see all of the big names coming up against each other and in peak form but that it’s almost impossibly unlikely given the fact that accidents happen regularly. Makes you wonder if the current churn of riders will ever allow any more Valverdes riding successfully into their late thirties?
