Or he just wasn’t good enough… There doesn’t always need to be an excuse. Wonder how Evenepoel became WC after Vuelta and double Olympic gold winner after the TDF
Yeh, Pog wasn’t good enough after winning the Giro-Tour double in emphatic fashion so he went on to win the Triple Crown (Worlds) and Lombardia (beating Remco in 2nd) along with some other minor races in Italy and Canada.

Remco himself had some interesting things to say about Pog’s superiority after Lombardia.

Remco was great, but Pogacar untouchable in 2024. It’s early days but so far Pog is on track and won’t be riding the Giro this season before the big rematch with a fit and healthy Vingegaard at the Tour. Remco should be a little closer again, we will see.

I think he was talking about Pog in Glasgow 2023. Don't think anybody is denying how great Pog was last year.

Over the last year (since last MSR defeat) Teddy lost a total of...one race (Quebec). In the meantime he won...10 races (Catalunya, Liege, Giro, Tour, Montreal, WC, Emillia, Lombardia, UAE, Strade). MSR is the last hope of humanity, if he wins it too it will be the end of cycling!

Sorry but no. He will lose minutes easily in the mountains. The only way I see Remco being closer is if Pogacar and Vingegaard are very equal and they start looking to each other.

Maybe Remco will throw a big pizza party and trick everyone else that he is eating, while Pog and Vinge eats a lot. Gains 3-5 kg each.

And in the first mountain stage Remco dancing on the pedals like prime Contador. Heard saying "I am Leanco" as he escapes. Pog and Vinge would be in trouble.

Calm down mate. There are still cobbled classics after MSR where Pogacar isn't that dominant.

Even his team doesn't believe he can compete in the Tour and the best possible scenario is a Tour podium. Merlier will race and will need 3 teammates with him to increase their chances of success (wins).

Yeah, forget Remco, Pidcock, Van der Poel and Vingegaard. Michael Matthews is his only real competition.

You described women's cycling as a different sport. I'm not reading anything into your comments that isn't blatantly obvious. Like you said, you might want to check yourself out...

All the type of post you made does for me, is concentrate my belief that Tadej is just the type of champion this sport needs. Sure, it would be nice if he had competition, but he is a great ambassador for the sport.
In terms of records it is a different sport. I will stop replying regarding this now.

Idk about that. I guess there is a subset of people who might find what Tadej does likable. I am not one of them. But I guess that is why different people have different favorite riders.

Have you watched Merlier's sprints these past few years? He doesn't need/want a train, he only needs (and will only get) Bert Van Lerberghe.

Of course other rouleurs in the team can keep both Remco and Merlier at the front during sprint stages.

Maybe but don't forget Tour sprints are way more hectic because there are a lot of trains there. Maybe you are right but I totally see 3 riders being selected to help Merlier

People still pretend like a participation in PR is an 80% chance the rest of your season will be in the hospital bed. Such an unnecessary fear.
Yep, of course the risk is higher but they are almost saying he will end his season there.

What is the proper risk assessment? 10 % risk of a crash like in Strade, 5 % risk of an injury?

I think that's too high. But perhaps not by much.

But the more relevant parameter to look at is the elevated risk of crash and injury in PR compared to other races. And I don't think that's particularly high.

But Kelly saying nonsense like he needs to be at the Tour to prove that last year's win wasn't a fluke is frankly infuriating. And also surprising as Kelly wasn't exactly known for limiting his own calendar.

This obsession with the Tour is what makes cycling less exciting! How many incredible riders would be irrelevant if only the Tour counted?

Just look at population averages for like 10 year of Strade or Roubaix then check if riders were doing something particularly stupid themselves.

his owners want to win the TDF. show the UAE logo in the biggest race. that's what's about. that's where the pressure comes from
