What Wellens did was huge. I wouldnt say Narvaez was disappointing, but the circumstances made Pog having to improvise and go earlier then what was the plan I think. I can understand if he may have been frustrated with how it played out and given his own position going into the climb. Then it looks like Narvaez might not have paced himself very well when he got on the front. Of course, he might have been on the limit already but maybe if he goes just a tad bit slower or just pull until he sees Pog goes past him instead. Rewatching, it looks like Narvaez just empties himself too soon... when he wasnt supposed to do that and Pog looks to side a bit perplexed. Realises he has to attack.

Again, it is hard to perfect given how they went into the climb and that will always be crucial. Del Toro getting lost in the sauce completely. There are some important details that could have been better. Still, it almost worked anyway. You just got to go for it, as they did. Cant wait. That is racing.

It showed a Cipressa attack might work though in the future. It didnt look impossible.

But wouldn’t MVDP still be on Pog’s wheel regardless of when he launched. And that’s really the only problem with their race strategy is that MVDP is in the race?

Of all the problems with what happens on the Cipressa, Narvaez not lasting 200m longer is the least of ther problems, unless Pogacar wanted to attack after the steepest part of the climb.

Narvaez being able to pull for a little bit longer and also potentially Del Toro doing a short stint would mean they could have put the pressure on a bit more, before Pog attacks.

Now he had to attack pretty early and his attack wasnt instant when Narvaez pulled to the side. Pog wasnt really ready to launch but he had to improvise.

The key is to make that first hard attack stick, after putting pressure on for a bit longer than what they could do here. Still it almost worked, but it could be an important detail to be able to put more pressure on for another 30-40 seconds before the attack comes.

I think a better entry into Cipressa and being able to put on pressure just a little bit more could be the difference needed to succeed here.

it all depends on whether he can avoid bad crashes and injuries, look at roglic, he's 9 years older and still at his best (or at least close to it). If he stays healthy the next 10 years he can win 5 more

He's still at 4, don't count chickens before they are hatched.
I think he has a good chance to end up with 7-8 wins but the more ahead we go the more unclear the image becomes (how long can he keep high level without setbacks? new, potentially dangerous rivals in a few years).

I did not count. I said IF he wins this year. There is a conditional here.

10 wins is a lot man. For some reason Merckx won "only" 7 MSR and competition was easier.

I think UAE doing a better entry is what is missing. Pogacar can be behind but his teammates need to be close to the front.

But as I also pointed out, that will be very hard to do. There will likely always be something not going to plan. Other teams and riders are gunning to position themselves as well. It is too early to go on Berta. This year was a good attempt, but things could have also been better as pointed out. A few details. They should definitely try again.

10 Lombardia wins will be hard but Pogačar only needs 4 more in order to become the rider with the most wins in a single monument and that is a record that I expect him to take.

Novak likely did that as well and was pulling for a while going into the Capos. Then his job was done for the day.

You will always need two guys like that, in this race, and they are reliable at doing just that.

Problem was that Narvaez, Del Toro and to some regard Pog got lost in the chaotic run-in to Cipressa. Politt kind of disappeared.

Wellens was the only one at the front going in and did his job. He had most likely been given instructions to start to pull from the bottom. While Pog and Narvaez made their way to the front. Then Narvaez just didnt have enough left to pull for as long, as they would have lilked. Del Toro just too far behind. Something that will always be a risk, hence the run-in is crucial. Like look what happened to Pidcock.

I feel like we wont agree, so there is no point in this.

The selection and tactics was it, but there are small details that has to align.

Novak did not work a lot in MSR. He is in bad shape, maybe preparing for the Ardennes.
