Teams & Riders Tadej Pogačar discussion thread

Vingegaard showed a similar level in some mountain stages when they both had their first duel (2021). Remco never showed any level similar to Pogacar in the mountains. You put Pogacar 2022 (TdF shape) against Remco 2022 (Vuelta shape) and Remco gets smoked. The difference is very big.

People improve and can improve, you know?
Put Pogacar 2022 and Evenepoel 2024 and the difference isn't that big.
I never said that on 2024 level Evenepoel has a chance against Pogacar.
All I said was, and I quote myself, IF Pogacar doesn't reach his 2024 level (which is not a given) and if Evenepoel improves, which is possible, if not likely, then we MAY have a battle.

If Pogacar is able to reach his 2024 level, it's pretty much over. But there's no way we can know that.

That comparison isn't real.
Roglic moved more w/k in 2024 Vuelta than Roglic 2020-21. The 2024 Roglic with 35 years isn't better than Roglic 2020 or 21 . And Pogacar is better now than he was at 21 in the 2020 Tour.
Not because simply w/k, but because of his superiority over rivals

The numbers for the entire peloton are improving year after year.

Based on times, Cancellara would´ve finished last in last year's PR :tearsofjoy: . Obviously, Cancellara wasn't worse than the entire current peloton.

You have to compare what Pogacar and Remco have done in the GTs in terms of results and difference to rivals. Not in terms of hill climb times, because you might find that Landa has better hill climb times than Contador, and when they competed, he wasn't better than Contador

You can't say that to conclude that Remco has the level of Pogacar in GT.
Not even Remco considers it

I find it strange that we have to argue that Remco isn´tt at the level of Pogacar, or Vingegaard, in GT.

If he's interessted in it he can transition even more in a classic specialist later in his career. When he's TdF record winner he probably will take on a few more pounds and train to be even more explosive. The he can secure San Remo and Roubaix if he doens't win it in the next few years.

I also think it's more likely that he will be taken over by another GC rider in GTs the that he will have more opponents on the same level as MvdP in the classics.

It's very likely that Remco and Pogacar at 30 won't be able to win a TDF, but they could win Liège and one-day efforts.
Possibly but we don't know until it happens. Just because a rider peaks earlier doesn't mean they automatically decline earlier. Seems clear already that Pogacar is an outlier.

I thought Pog might have been like Andy Schleck but instead has continued to improve as he reaches the normal peak for endurance athletes of late 20s to early 30s.

Again I would like to mention Valverde - started very young but was still competitive well into his late 30s. Not saying Pog will be still riding then but I don't think we can say he can't win a TDF at 30. That's only 4 years from now!

You don't even think about Pogacar getting better but he (probably) will.

This constant need of putting Remco alongside Jonas and Pogacar... he is not even a natural climber, but some people are expecting a higher improvement from him than an improvement from Pogacar and Vingegaard. Even if this happens, he still needs to close a huge hole, he lost constantly 1 and half minutes in the hard mountain stages. This is huge! We are not talking about 30/40 seconds.

Looking at the Sallanches World Championships, when will Pogacar go to win the Vuelta? :tearsofjoy:

They say next year's WC in Canada won't be the same circuit where Merckx won and Montreal GP, less hard.
Maybe 2026 would be the right year; this year in Rwanda, and at Sallanches Pogacar has a chance to win the World Championships.

In '80, less than 20 riders finished, insane circuit

He might as well just ride the vuelta this year. The circuit will be harder than this year's worlds. someone can tell me I'm wrong. But Pogi looks strongest on steep terrain over bumpy circuits.

Pogacar said becoming a two-time world champion was his mail goal.

Tour-Vuelta-World Championship in Rwanda... long travel.
If he does it, Ithink he won't go to Lombardia this year.

Only 15 finished in Sallanches 80, insane

He’s younger, has been off the bike due to crashes more, and started racing at 17. Obviously there’s more room to improve for him. You don’t have to be a fan to see that, just use logic.

I don't think anything.
I only said that you (or me) can't predict what level will Pogacar and Evenepoel reach during the Tour. Evenepoel may well reach higher level and Pogacar lower than last year because of his classics shenanigans.

We won't even see Pogacar in a hard mountain stage before june, we have no idea what level he is on, or will be.

Did he say this though? I have not seen that. We all know he wants to win stuff, but he hasn't expressed any such thing that I noticed.

"Defending the World Championship - this is my big wish."

Fair enough. Language is fitting.

He also waffled elsewhere about time at home. Which is different than time to recover for peaking properly. I hope someone explains to him there is time for home after he retires. Like 50-60 years of it largely uninterrupted if he wishes.

And didn't he basically allude to riding the Vuelta this year as well?
At least that what I saved in my head. Might be wrong though ofc.
Rwanda is 11 14 days after the Vuelta ends... not impossible to do both.

Edit: just checked it again because it didn't make sense with 11 days, I made a mistake, it's 14 days.

Ah!
But it does also mention in the article:

"However, speaking with Spanish journalist Javier Ares on his podcast El Pinganillo Marc Soler was more forthright with the team's intention to race for the Tour-Vuelta double.

Asked about his major objective for the season, Soler said, "Honestly, winning the Tour again with Tadej and winning La Vuelta with Tadej.""
