Badly bruised, possibly even cracked, ribs, he said he avoided the worst of the crash but like at the Giro someone then clattered into him which pushed him square chest on into an electricity pole

Thanks. Hope it's just bruising.

Sounds like it could have been much worse - hope he's ok -

I landed directly on my head and with some dizziness decided it was not wise for myself or others to continue," Luckily there are don't seem to be any major consequences for the Brit, who hit his head quite hard. "My helmet is destroyed but thankfully did its job. None the less we will asses my head again in the coming hours and days."

I took a few years off of following racing so I missed this one. He wore the pink one day. Was he just a talented flash in the pan? I literally know nothing of him. How was the race overall?

Thanks all.

This thread might prove some info:

Otherwise, you'll have to dig up the various stage threads for the 2020 Giro.

But basically he never wore the pink - apart from on the final podium - he went into the final ITT tied on time with Hindley, but being the better time trialist he won.

He was very good, only matched by Hindley in climbing and much better in the TT.
He has had a very strange career since then, failing to reach peak shape and getting set back by some bad crashes. In the Giro 2023 he was contender for pink until he crashed out.

The 2020 Giro was very entertaining. At the time it seemed like a race of B-tier riders, but in retrospect the level was quite high, especially when you look at watts. And while not a star at the time, it is quite clear now that Hindley and to an extent Geoghegan Hart were big talents.

You’d have to say flash in the pan.

I think thats harsh to say that as such, he was in top top form going into that 23 Giro, and absolutely looked set to win it again, Lidl Trek had just signed him as their next GC leader. he gets that win then he's a 2x GT winner, but it didnt happen because of the big crash he had.

and then its been stop start, more crashes, illnesses ever since, like in interviews earlier this year he said its the first winter he'd trained properly since that crash, and then gets into this season its again been stop start again progress, DNFs, DNS etc

its hard to comeback from serious injuries first off, but even harder if in the intervening time the level has risen up again.

but you cant see Lidl extending his contract really which is up this year. and I dont really know where he would go, or which team would fit him.

To be frank after his 2020 Giro win, Tao gave no indication he would would win another GT. He's ridden 8 GT's and outside of his Giro victory, he has one top 20 in a GT. I suspect he will retire as I doubt he he has the level for WT.

Total speculation on my part, but I feel like EF could be a suitable landing spot if the price was right. I just get the impression that they'd take a flyer on a reclamation project.

I voted for him in the 2023 Giro first rest day poll. Don't regret my decision.

Roglic - 45%
Geoghegan Hart - 29%
Everyone else < 10%

Does anyone know of an example of a rider who got exactly one GT top 10, with that result being a win? TGH is likely to become such a rider and I can't think of anyone else.

Before winning the Vuelta, Kuss only had one top-10 in another Vuelta. None in one-week races.
