i strongly disagree with those that say that cancellara is having anything but a terrific tour.

it is not his job to place high. it is his job to usher his man to the early slopes of the highest climbs and then empty the tank while shelling contenders off the back of the pack.

and to win the time trials if he can.

let's see. his man is in second place by 8 seconds. he won the prologue and wore the mj for several stages. check and check.

his job tomorrow is to scout the course, set time checks for andy, and hopefully hang on to win the whole thing.

if he does win he's gonna have to be sitting in that chair for a veeeery loooong time!

I'd have sworn I remembered some pretty good TT performances by Hesjedal but looking at CQ I think I must have dreamed them up. That 13th (11th without Schumacher and Kohl) place you mention seems to be about his only remarkable result.

15th in the 2008 Olympic games TT, 20th in the 9th stage of the 2009 TdS, 12th in the first stage of the Volta a Catalunya this year... Not much, really. I must be getting old.

Hejesdal also finished first in the Tour of California TT this year.

wind

thanks for posting this publicus. i was wondering which direction the wind would come from. however, this looks like it predicts a headwind to me. anyone here familiar with the wind patterns in bordeaux?

That looks like a headwind. It should be a seabreeze, maybe tending up the Girond river valley, strengthening and becoming more gusty into mid-afternoon, which may work against the favorites.

No he did not. Martin won that ITT, Rogers was second and Zabriskie third. Hesjedal finished 14th.

I believe there is a tailwind tomorrow. At least that's how I read this map:

etape_19.gif

CN have said that the earlier starters will have a tailwind with the later starters having the headwind. Read the wiggins article.

Here is a cool video of the lead up to the tourmalet with all the people camping on the climb.

Eurosport and ITV, in their infinite wisdom, have decided not to start til about 2, meaning they will miss all the TT specialists...

First time check coming soon. This year the LeTour website actually seems to have it's ish together and be capable of providing decent live timing info rather than 15 minute update clumps.

You would think on a course like this that a rider like Grabsch would be going faster than 49km/h? What is the wind like?

What's the time limit rules today - unless we've had mechanicals already some people look likely to be 7/8 mins + off the pace.

If they aren't live, then neither are French tv, so no feed zone.

Bookwalter about to start. Hopefully he can do something but big bertie grabsch is going to love this course as he can roll that big gear along and there are no climbs on the course. I like watching big power houses like him in tt's.

Don't ever be stupid enough to trust the weather man.

I think the headwind will suit the stronger riders in the race therefore the tt will suit AC over AS, but if someone in the gc has a bad day in the itt, then it could be disastrous.
