I guess that is the end of perriero :(
Jesus Hernandez won his place on Alpe d huez, one of the last 8 from any team and helped to launch Contadors first attack
I think he will be a really big help along with Navarro as they all seem to be best friends, the mental pressure from last years astana will not be there for contador

Pereiro never really showed that he had anything. His Tour de Suisse was horrible and he really needed to show something. I think he just didn't have what he had in 2006 (namely a decent program (clinic)).

I kind of wonder if Pereiro didn't already know that he wasn't riding the Tour prior to TdSuisse. I know Astana had put out a fairly long short list for the TdF, but all year they have said one thing in the press, and then had a separate strategy that the riders all knew about and kept private until after the race. Martinelli seems to be cagey that way.

I'm actually not surprised that Oscar was left at home. He had a terrible Tour de Suisse. Noval, Iglinsky, Grivko and Vino will be the men for the flats.

I am a little bit surprised about Hernandez, but he had a much better Dauphine than Fofonov.

Still is a shame because the guy was thinking of retirement and then gets pulled in by Astana and does not get a tour spot. It is a bit sad for him.

Boonen (QS) and Haussler (Cervelo) out due to injuries, Daniel Lloyd will replace Haussler, no news yet who will replace Boonen.

Tom Boozen is out because they could not import flat belgian beer for use during stages, they tried a variation on the Cancelara d)efect, but the tap on the handle bars kept overflowing, also telling him to give it both barrels in the sprint made for some premature celebrations. The obvious choice of Vodka was ruled out , due to his choice of dry mixer.

Astana:

Contador, Vinokourov, De la Fuente, Grivko, Hernandez, Igliskiy, Navarro, Noval, Tiralongo

Looking rather weak for stage 3. I guess Hernandez and Noval were always going to get a spot, what with them being good friends of Bertie.

But with Van Petegem's help, Bertie will be flying off the front with FC!

I think it's weak for Stage 3 compared to BMC, Saxo and others. I think Noval, Iglinsky, Vino and Grivko will be the go to guys for the early stages (and Hernandez suprisingly has a bit of experience with the cobbles). But one can't argue that they aren't going into those stages with a disadvantage.

As for Hernandez, he actually earned his spot. He was, outside of Navarro, AC's strongest climbing domestique at the Dauphine. He basically took the spot I always thought Fofonov had in the bag (but he conversely had a bad Dauphine).

As I said earlier, if they can get through the first 3 stages without injuries, then they've got a very strong team for the remainder of the Tour. That's a big if though, so we will have to see how it plays out.

He knew the score. He had to earn a spot. He didn't. There is always the Vuelta. Plus it's not like he isn't getting paid handsomely for his poor performance. Same with Allan Davis.

Well he wasn't ripped off this time. His record speaks for itself. Plus he had to know that he wasn't making the team when he wasn't invited to any of the camps.

He certainly wasn't ripped of this year, he has been invisible the whole season so far.

Seems fair enough.

I never thought Henderson is good enough to force his way into that squad. But what he's said there seems okay. Everyone who misses the cut is going to be upset, he didn't exactly spit the dummy. I liked the way he took the **** out of DB business speak.

It's too hard to get into that squad, or any squad with a first class sprinter if your main ability is... sprinting, but on a lower level.

Saxo's problem on the cobble stage is that although they have the guys to really put the hurt on Astana in particular, they are limited in how hard they can really go by needing to ensure that Frank and in particular Andy make the splits.

If you're going to troll, at least make it a lot less obvious. It won't matter, you are only a tourist who will leave as soon as the Tour is over.

agreed. if anything pereiro’s non-selection is a mild surprise. fofonov’s absence though is a surprise as is gryvko’s presence.

not that gryvko does not deserved the spot but i thought his exhausting giro wouldn’t allow him to recuperate in time. He rode all stages there iirc.
