That was my first thought, but then I remembered Hinault didn't win any mountain stages that tour (or road stages aside from the last one)

He also won a flat one in 79 but from a small group

Ah right. He had the same time as Olano so I mixed it up. But he got it on fractions of a second from the TT.

Which is ironic because - I've just now realized this - Olano lost it the same way in the Giro the same year to another russian.

The mountain in that stage was about 80k from the finish, and it wasn't even all that.
