He specified that it'd have to be a 50 man bunch, which it was at the bottom of the hill, but since there was splits, I doubt it counts.

In that case I can't think of anyone since Merckx

That was my first thought, but then I remembered Hinault didn't win any mountain stages that tour (or road stages aside from the last one)

He also won a flat one in 79 but from a small group

EDIT No wait, it wasn't a bunch sprint but it was still larger than 50, so it's 1979, Hinault.

EDIT: Ah damn, missed a cut in the middle. 40 riders. Ignore.

Who has held the GC lead for shortest distance? Only the situation at the end of the stage is counted, so Kittel had it for 156 kilometres, Bakelandts 170,5 (145,5+25) and so on.

Definitely found it now. Sercu in 77
And consecutive, even. Stages 12 and 13A

EDIT: Still don't. Only just realized it's Cat.1 or HC only.

But if it's not same year, then yes Gerrans
Otherwise Merckx 74

Gilbert in 2011 if we count TTTs.

Maybe there were shorter stages than that in the past, but I am not going to look

And if we don't, Berzin 1996. 46kms in the shortened alpine stage

you gotta help me on this one you nerds :D

who was the last rider to win a MTF and a bunch sprint in le tour until gerrans? i have no idea

by the way, abdou didn't win a mtf in 1996, hushovd could have won that too easily. it was just a 2 kms ramp

Your avatar won a MTF and a sprint stage, though the sprint stage was not won in the sprint.

He also had it the day before, so that's an additional 30km ;)

Ah right. He had the same time as Olano so I mixed it up. But he got it on fractions of a second from the TT.

Which is ironic because - I've just now realized this - Olano lost it the same way in the Giro the same year to another russian.

Could not remember if that Mountain stage he won in 2011 was an MTF thanks.

The mountain in that stage was about 80k from the finish, and it wasn't even all that.
