Great news. No way another sponsor will come in and provide anything close to the budget. The Tour may become worth watching again.

I don't think its great news when money is leaving a sport.

I don't think it is great news if people potential will lose employment (backroom staff etc)

I don't think it is great news when excess riders may be on the market and thus suppress rider wages and earning power in contract negotiations

If Sky cease to exist the tour won't change. The modern way of racing will continue. Power meters, radio, training, fueling, tactics etc etc etc all lead to racing as it is now. You will not see kamikaze breaks or people losing minutes only to gain them back the next day. Modern Racing is modern racing, i doubt Sky being in the sport or not will change any of that

To play Devil's Advocate:

Large amounts of money that kills competition being removed can lead to more, smaller amounts of money coming in, possibly making up the short-fall and increasing the stability of the funding model.

I don't think it is great news if people potential will lose employment (backroom staff etc)

Not playing on this one. People losing jobs is never good.

I don't think it is great news when excess riders may be on the market and thus suppress rider wages and earning power in contract negotiations

This is supposing that the influx of a large funding source didn't over-inflate the wages in the first place. We don't know what everyone was earning but there has long been speculation that very generous wages were being paid to ensure riders remain as super domestiques, rather than leaving and becoming rivals. This may actually help the average rider.

Throughout the history of the Tour we have seen one team dominate and then a period of flux, followed by another team dominating. I'm expecting something very similar is Sky don't continue at their current level of funding.

Giro nor Vuelta involved a skytrain and I enjoyed them both.

It's great news for anyone who isn't a Sky fan. Their hoarding of top talent, suffocating the life out of races, sanctimonious attitude and ridiculous fanboys won't be missed.

it is unfortunate for the sport that a sponsor is exiting, but I don't think Brailsford nor team management were surprised. Brailsford and management team must have boardroom meetings and conversations before officially announcing it. They've known for a while and will probably come out with another title sponsor in the upcoming season. It hasn't been first big team in cycling to have this happen, and it certainly won't be the last.

For all their talent hoarding and suffocation of races they have won 1 monument, a couple of minor classics, 1 giro and 1 vuelta (admittedly they've been excellent at week long stage races).

I suspect that if Brailsford can find sponsorship of 18 to 20m, then Sky will do OK - They will lose one of Froome/Thomas, probably a Kwiatkovski type and possibly a Moscon - They are lucky they recruited a cohort of young talented riders in the last two years who will keep their budget in check.

Brailsford had found out a few weeks ago.

Two monuments. Otherwise true.

Re: Team Sky Discussion thread

I think all are agreed that finding another, comparable commercial sponsor is going to be incredibly difficult, if not impossible. Other, smaller sponsors, with less budget, for the best team in cycling - yeah, almost a given. That said, Brailsford's ruthless ambition and sizeable ego isn't going to accept taking a backward step to mid-pack fodder.

I think there's 2 scenarios, either Brailsford leaves for pastures new and onto challenges outside of cycling and Team Sky ceases to exist (Brailsford is Team Sky, after all), or he can attract a non-commercial sponsor, i.e. some kind middle-eastern state sponsorship or wealthy cycling enthusiast who quite fancies the proposition of having Brailsford win him a TdF. Tinkoff anyone?

I doubt Brailsford will struggle to find a new title sponsor. The core of the team is under contracts, and for the widest audience the team is the most recognized outfit in the sport.
An issue for the new backer might be the identity, since Sky's made it from scratch, and it's hard to separate current personnel from it. The shade will be there for some time. Suppose there will be some negotiating budget-wise, but I doubt adventurists will make the offers.
Perfect moment for Oleg Tinkov's return to the sport/business... That would be some twist in the tale, wouldn't it?
God please let this happen. It would be glorious.

A major sponsor leaving and people are happy..... some just want to watch the world burn

Cycling certainly attracts some idiots - many of them on here. In what possible way is a major sponsor leaving the sport good? Honestly.......it beggars belief..

You get the sport you deserve; maybe some would prefer steel frames, singlespeeds, woollen jerseys, etc

Depends on whether you believe Team Sky are a positive influence in the sport or not.

I'm not inclined to believe it for one second.
