Hats off to Sir Dave. His best chance at winning the Tour this year didn't believe in himself enough to go for it. He is the youngest rider in the race, so this isn't a knock on him. If anything, it's a huge gamble for the team. But Brailsford measures up the odds and rolls the dice. He shows Bernal his own strength. And, insanely, shows his own team their leader's weaknesses. That's deep strategic thinking coupled with a hard-won racing nous and a steadfast belief in your decision-making, right there, and then. Hard to see any other DS make that call. But he did. So honestly, a huge Chapeau!
So now, Ineos now 2-3 and with one of the two strongest climbers in the race in an ideal position to counterpunch. And their erstwhile leader itching to make that first attack. No assurance of anything, everything but, yet a near-guarantee of exciting racing to come.
