The problem is, when they became a Continental team they were essentially a semi-feeder for Abarcá, that's why guys like Kwiatkowski were there. When they went ProConti that role ended, but they've still suffered repeatedly from Unzué treating them like so whenever one of their home-grown talents becomes strong enough for the World Tour, with José Herrada and Javi Moreno coming in 2012, Rubén Fernández in 2015, Carlos Barbero this year (admittedly to replenish their depleted and mostly irrelevant sprinting side) and now apparently Rosón for 2018. Caja Rural, for their part, have gladly swallowed up Abarcá offcuts like Ángel Madrazo, Sérgio Pardilla, David Arroyo and - via other teams of course - Luís León Sánchez.
Losing Rosón will gut the Caja Rural team for sure as he's been the prime bright spot in the squad since all their homegrown talents like Bilbao, Barbero and Fraile were pilfered. But the loss is definitely exacerbated by the fact Trofimov's off-road and visa issues have prevented him racing and the Vuelta has yet to come when somebody like a Pardilla could well get a fairly quiet but decent placing and a stage win here or there could be possible, even if only from a departing rider. They have some really good talent in their U23 team though. Álvaro Cuadros won the Memorial Balenziaga and was 2nd in the Subida a Gorla, two of the most important Basque amateur races, both for climbers, and has good mountain performances back to the Peace Race in 2014. Mauri Moreira is a good Uruguayan prospect who's the national TT champion but has good results in punchy races as well as powerhouse flat racing. And Xavier Cañellas is just 20 but looks like a dynamic prospect, he comes from a track background and has good sprint strength as well as an eye for the right move to follow.
They do run the risk of essentially becoming a Spanish Topsport Vlaanderen, and they do probably need to pick up somebody as a pseudo-leader to help take pressure off their development corps in the way Rosón could do if they could keep him, or Trofimov maybe could have done in the way LuLu, Txurruka or Pardilla have done in the past, or at least kept one of Barbero and Bilbao, who could provide a steady stream of results. We can laugh but somebody like Zubeldia would have been perfect if a couple of years younger. They've probably been scared off hunting the Portuguese scene for riders after their experience with Alberto Gallego, otherwise someone like Amaro Antunes or Joni Brandão might cross their mind. It's too late for Igor Antón I think, notwithstanding he'll also obviously be a target of Murias. Ideally, someone like Plaza or Navarro would be free for them. As it stands, Rafa Valls is probably the most obvious target who's out of contract I think.
However, it's worth noting that the two biggest standouts at Lizarte this year are Jaime Castrillo and Sérgio Samitier, both of whom are climbers. If Movistar are signing Rosón and Landa too, that's a lot of new climbing talent onto the team especially only a year after Carapaz and with Soler just starting to hit his stride, so they've got to make room. They're already losing out on rouleurs with Malori retiring, but with Castroviejo rumoured to be leaving and guys like Dowsett now considering their future too, they're probably going to have to jettison some capable climbers to keep the team functional because that's a lot of flat horsepower being lost. It can't just be the likes of Arcas and Pedrero that get lost in the shuffle, so there ought to be some of their climbing corps available for Caja Rural to try to pick up too...
