Movistar was in a weird position today. I think that if you told them prior to the start they were going to lose 54 seconds to the winner, everyone would be happy and smiling. But now, knowing that the likes of Astana and Katusha did better, I'm somewhat disappointed.

Three seconds and one second, come on. They were at their place.
I could also point to Cannondale. I just expected more of them, despite the likes of Gorka, Castroviejo not being on the team anymore. Movistar used to be atop of the food chain in this discipline not too long ago.

Cannondale and Astana were the saves of the day. Movistar would have to be a little disappointed with that.

Movistar SD Arrieta, yesterday:
"Another race will start for us after the cobblestones stage. But we don't have three leaders. We have only one leader: it's Nairo Quintana because of his past at the Tour de France."
Any comment?

That's why they send half of the squad to bring back Landa after that crash yesterday
If you want to know what's happening in Movistar, don't listen Arrieta nor any other DS, listen to Unzue and Valverde...

What Blanco said is correct. To really know what's going on at Movistar listen to Unzue and Valverde. Don't just listen to what they say, but also what they don't say as that can be just as important as what is said. Unzue has continued to say 3 leaders. Valverde has said 2 race race leaders as he's the team leader and those responsibilities fall on his shoulders. One other thing, don't be shocked if Arrieta's comment was try to appease the Quintana/Colombian fans. Also Valverde made a comment this morning before the start of the stage that we're here to try to win with either Landa or Quintana (he said their names in that order) as they have better options than he has, but that doesn't mean he can't go stage hunting. He also said if something happens and it falls to him that he'll do what he can, but doubts he can actually win it. Yes there are 3 protected riders on this team.

According to an article in the Spanish language cycling publication AS, Arrieta never said anything about Quintana being there leader and they have 3 leaders.

Here's the link to the article:
https://as.com/ciclismo/2018/07/11/tour_francia/1531332408_456373.html?id_externo_rsoc=comp_fb

Here's the paragraph in Spanish:

Preguntado por As, Arrieta negó haber realizado esas declaraciones: “Yo no dije nada de eso, no hablé sobre el tema. Nada ha cambiado en nuestra estrategia. Disponemos de tres bazas”. Diario As también contactó con los encargados de la comunicación del Tour, que desmintieron al navarro y confirmaron su información.

According to google translate this is the English translation:

Asked by As, Arrieta denied having made those statements: "I did not say anything about that, I did not talk about it. Nothing has changed in our strategy. We have three tricks. " Diario As also contacted the people in charge of the communication of the Tour, who denied the Navarre and confirmed their information.

It was yesterday (or the day before yesterday) quoted in official Racecenter at letour.fr.

It was, this article is from today and he's denying having said it at all. Thus more reason to just basically ignore what Movistar's DS's say for the most part. Heck at Catalonia last year the DS (I think it was again Arrieta) that said they had considered pulling the team out, then decided to allow the team to stay but they weren't going to race they were just there. Then Valverde went out and put on a clinic in bike racing. So, this is just more proof of not pay too much attention to their DS's.

100%. Like in most team sports, when a DS or manager speaks to the press their goals are a) talk up/motivate your riders b) don't give away any secret plans c) charm the media so they give you positive coverage in future d) give the journos some filler if a/b/c give you nothing to say.

Amazing team performance today.

Overall, the first 9 day has been a success. Yes, Quintana lost a bit of time, Valverde didn't win a stage and Landa, Rojas is out and Landa crashed, but you can't ask for more this this. Froome is the reference and Valv is a bit ahead, Landa same time and Quintana a bit down, but not much. Now the race starts!

Agree - this was a superb stage from them. Somehow juggled keeping multiple key players safe and recovering losses when they did happen. I did not expect that at all

Amador and Bennati did a great job today. Protecting Quintana for most of the race and later on doing the work for Landa. Quintana entered the cobbles in a top 10 position every single time.

Agreed. They did a great job, they've kept their 3 leaders in the GC fight while others have fallen away. Tomorrow starts the real race with a nice descent finish. Impressed Movistar was able to get Landa very close to where he only lost a handful of seconds today. Even without getting Valverde a stage win they did a great job of managing the first week.

I must confess that watching Nairo latched to GVA wheel in some of the last cobbled sectors looked unreal

Great team performance, but how strong Bala is today, it's unreal!

Bennati is a monster, probably the best bodyguard that a lightweight climber could have on flat stages.

Yeah, he always does an amazing job since he lost his top speed. His work for Nibali, Contador and Valverde was very over the years, especially Contador had stupidly strong Tour teams in 2013 and 2014.

Erviti and Amador pulled Landa, not Benna...

Quiet day today. I hope tomorrow we'll see some action, Landa seems most likely to attack.

The loss of Rojas is pretty bad, Soler is super inconsistent since Catalunya, so this is pretty much bound to happen. God I wish they still had Castroviejo or Izagirre. One of the tree amigos arent gonna sacrifice himself for the others, so prepare for a lot of blame towards Valverde from commentators (even though he is the last one of those who should attack).

I don't know tomorrow, I fear they are just gonna wait for Huez.
