Kim Clijsters doesn't look so buff at all and she's by far the best female tennis player these days.

She had a pulmonary embolism if I remember correctly, it's the same thing that caused the death of VDB. Which says all you need to know.

Anyhow,

Clijsters twisted her ankle at the beginning of her match with Li Na :( She still won though, so all is good.

r me, the tennis ranking is a ranking of consistency not per se a ranking of who is the best though often the best tennis player is also the most consistent one.

Women's rankings give much more weight to semi-finals, quarters etc than the mens - hence you have joke no. 1s like jankovic, safina and the current leader. In any case, womens tennis is a travesty these days, even Clijsters regularly loses sets 6-0 to nobodies. I managed to watch half of Wozniacki vs Jankovic this morning - I can't believe how low standards have sunk. The 3 GSs Clijsters won since coming back collectively aren't worth her first...

Yeah, it's pretty low right now, but Clijsters her level hasn't gone down since before her come-back in my opinion. The rest have a pretty low level these days though. Justin Henin will always remain the best Belgian tennis player however, no matter how much GS Clijsters takes this year. When Clijsters loses it's either because she's injured or not focused enough(against nobodies for example).

By the way, told you Serena Willians wasn't the best aynmore these days Hitch :p She has a long way to go before she reaches her old level again.

It was amusing to see a woman, Makarova beat Williams today.

Any opinions about Djokovic who is a class above anyone at the moment in men's tennis?

Agreed, she will give Caroline a mugging tonight*. However, if she can manage to claim Roland Garros and Wimbledon this year and complete the career slam (unlikely), I think we can rate her more highly than Henin. What's happened to Wickmayer by the way, she was meant to be the next big thing from Belgium a couple of years ago - crashing out in the 1st round now?

* This could be wrong

Hewitt took a set off him. I expect him to lose if he plays Federer in the finals. Roger at his best will still beat anyone on any surface other than clay.

also on clay, i'd say. just that he was never at his best on clay... or never at his best in finals against nadal. that was often a mental issue. he could have won a couple of extra RG's, if he'd played his own attacking game, rather than duelling with Nadal from the baseline.

Fed is only capable of dull semi-final defeats these days, I hope for tennis' sake Del Potro sends him back to Switzerland so he can do a number on Nadal (if Berdych doesn't get the job done first). On another note, I just can't get my mind round the idea of Djokovic suddenly becoming some unstoppable force - I just can't accept him the same category of player as Fed when he was at the top of his game, and fully expect him to fail to defend his AO title. Apparently his movement was pretty poor against Hewitt today?

Federer has trouble closing these days, that's his biggest problem. Don't count on Del Po taking him down though. Berdych at his very best can beat Nadal but it's a long shot.

I don't put Novak in the same class as either Roger or Nadal when they're at their best, even though his game literally has no weakness (his only weakness was his fitness, which he's taken care of). He looked shaky at times last night but wasn't ever in any trouble.

to be fair that comment I made was before Hewitt actually won a set.

Roger steamrolls DelPo. Not surprising - he's in top form. Nadal tested big time by Berdych but comes through. Will be a great semi final matchup.

It has been so hard to not assume that Serena dopes.

She disappears for months on end from the tennis scene and is seen about doing lots of non tennis and non physical activity things (i.e. opening stores, starting clothing lines, spectating, owns a football (american) team, movie premieres, celebrity parties). Suddenly she appears in perfect condition and out-muscles/grinds her opponents more than anything else.

It makes a mockery of the so-called testing programme. No cyclist could do that, but she knows she can get away with it.

it does.

Probably all the WTA cares about is how NOT to let Serena (or any of the other stars for that matter) test positive.
She's a walking money maker and by herself has caused the entire women's game to be alot more interesting for sponsors. She's a direct and indirect source of income for a lot of people.
Serena testing positive? Not in this lifetime.

So indeed, the testing regime in tennis (women AND men of course) is a farce, and has merely been put in place to keep up appearances. Like in cycling, though a bit worse probably.

A LOT of this, but also that women's tennis just isn't that competitive - so a genuinely good player like Williams can breeze in and out of the game to a certain extent. Especially in the current era. It couldn't happen in men's pro cycling that's for sure, but that's a much more competitive sport. Probably someone like Vos could swan in and out of women's cycling and pick up plenty of decent results when she felt like it. On the question of Williams' doping though, the pictures tell the story.

So what would it take, to get Serena preperly tested? Direct WADA intervention?

Novitzky might have some spare time once he's done with Pharmstrong.

Only if he had reason to suspect her selling dope, administering it to other, evading tax, etc. Let's face it, we all think she dopes, but who thinks she commits crimes?
